The office of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on the 19th that Merkel has rejected the job invitation of UN Secretary-General Guterres to serve as a UN adviser. Merkel "called the UN Secretary-General to thank him, but declined the offer".

German news agency quoted a United Nations source on the 19th as saying that Guterres recently sent a letter to Merkel, inviting her to serve as a United Nations consultant and lead a high-level advisory body for global public goods. The agency is one of Guterres' flagship projects on U.N. reform and could be responsible for dealing with global issues such as the ozone layer, aviation security and world trade.

Merkel has stepped out of the public eye since leaving office last December, and although she has an office in the Bundestag, she has not been seen since leaving office. Bowman, head of Merkel's office, told Der Spiegel that Merkel was writing an autobiography and that "she wanted to explain the core political decisions she had made in her own words and look back on her life." According to Bauman, the autobiography is expected to be completed in two to three years.
