According to Russia Today Television (RT) reported on January 19, UN Secretary-General António Guterres offered a job to former German Chancellor Angela Merkel. She has been invited to hold the highest position in the "High-Level Advisory Body on Global Public Goods".

The news was received by deutsche Press (DPA) from within the United Nations.

The scope of the advisory body's work is unclear, but international committees like these are usually responsible for dealing with global issues such as the ozone layer, aviation safety and world trade.

Guterres wrote a personal letter to Merkel recommending the job.

At present, Merkel has not yet officially replied.

Deutsche Zeitung believes merkel's chances of accepting the position are "considered rather low." Merkel, who ruled Germany for 16 years, is the second-longest-serving chancellor and one of the EU's longest-serving leaders. She officially stepped down on December 2, 2021.

The United Nations has not commented on the matter.

Rumors about Merkel's entry into the United Nations are nothing new. As early as the election of the new UN secretary-general in 2016, both German and foreign media had said Merkel would be a good candidate.

It is reported that the highest positions in the United Nations are usually held by former heads of state and senior politicians. Guterres himself served as Prime Minister of Portugal.

But PassBlue, a news outlet covering the U.N., quoted Merkel's spokesperson in February 2021 as saying she was not interested in replacing Guterres as U.N. secretary-general.
