According to Reuters, U.S. cable company SubCom has contracted more than 50,000 kilometers of submarine cable repair work in the South Pacific. Tyco said it was working with Tonga Telecom to mobilize ships to repair submarine cables, which they predicted would take "at least 4 weeks to fix Tonga submarine cables."

Caribbean Telecom Operator expects to establish temporary 2G communications today, prioritizing the resumption of calls and text messages. However, the coverage and efficiency of this temporary communication is very limited, about 10% of normal time.

Last Saturday's eruption damaged Tonga's only submarine cable in two places, cutting off the Pacific island nation from all contact with the outside world. After Tonga's "disappearance", the satellite phone in the embassy became the only local communication tool.

This eruption also caused a tsunami that killed at least 3 people and nearly destroyed the island's agriculture. At present, the rescue team is racing against time to deliver relief supplies to Tonga.
