author:Microsoft Research Asia

Today, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) announced the 2021 ACM Fellow List to recognize researchers from universities, businesses, and research institutions around the world for their contributions in areas such as algorithms, computer science education, cryptography, data security and privacy, medical informatics, and mobile and network systems. Dr. Tieyan Liu, Vice President of Microsoft Research Asia, was selected as the 2021 ACM Fellow for his outstanding contributions to machine learning algorithms and applications.

As the world's most influential professional academic organization in the field of computing, ACM's Turing Award (A.M. The Turing Award) is recognized as a Nobel Prize in Computing, while the ACM Fellow is the highest honor awarded by ACM for the outstanding contributions of its members to computing and information technology. Fewer than one percent of ACM's global membership is receiving the ACM Fellow award.

Dr. Tieyan Liu is currently The Associate Dean of Microsoft Research Asia, leading machine learning and interdisciplinary research efforts. He is an internationally renowned scholar in the field of artificial intelligence, an academician of the International Computer Society (ACM Fellow), an academician of the International Society of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE Fellow), an honorary professor of the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom, and an adjunct professor and doctoral supervisor of Tsinghua University, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the University of Science and Technology of China, Huazhong University of Science and Technology and other universities. Dr. Liu Tieyan is mainly engaged in the research of machine learning algorithms and theories, and actively explores the application of machine learning in the industry and the scientific community, and has achieved world-renowned research results.

In 2003, Dr. Liu Tieyan officially joined Microsoft Research Asia after nine years of tsinghua campus study. The diversified, open and international research environment of Microsoft Research Asia provides full research support for Dr. Liu Tieyan. Although Dr. Liu Tieyan's growth path has never left China, his academic achievements and influence in the field of computer science are undoubtedly the world's top. He has published hundreds of high-quality academic papers in top international conferences and journals, and has been cited nearly 35,000 times to date, with an H-index of 68. He has not only won the Best Paper Award and the Highest Citation Paper Award, but has also served as the conference president, program committee chair, or field chair of many top international academic conferences including WWW/WebConf, SIGIR, KDD, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, AAAI, and associate editor of top international journals such as ACM TWEB, ACM TOIS, and IEEE TPAMI.

As a pioneer in the field of sorting learning, Dr. Liu Tieyan's academic monograph "Learning to rank for information retrieval" written in 2011 was hailed as a treasure book in this field, selling nearly 100,000 copies online and offline, becoming one of the top ten best-selling books for Chinese authors in springer's computer field. The lightGBM he led the team to open source in 2017 is now also the most popular machine learning tool in Kaggle competitions and KDD Cups, and one of the tools of choice in industrial decision-making. In 2018, he and his team proposed a dual learning framework, and used this as a core technology to help Microsoft reach the level of human experts in Chinese and English news translation tasks, and the following year won 8 championships in the WMT International Machine Translation Competition. In 2019, Dr. Liu Tieyan led the team to develop the strongest mahjong AI suphx in history, which was promoted to ten dan on the internationally renowned mahjong platform "Tianfeng", and the stable dan significantly surpassed the top human players, which generated great repercussions in the competitive mahjong world. In 2020, Dr. Liu Tieyan's team contributed the most accurate COVID-19 trend prediction model to the international disease control field, which has become an important basis for multinational anti-epidemic policy formulation, and also provided the core machine learning technology for T-DETECT COVID, the first FDA-approved diagnosis of covid-19 based on human immune cells. In 2021, his team developed the Graphormer model for molecular simulation and came out on top in the KDD Cup Molecular Modeling Competition and the OC20 Catalyst Design Competition, demonstrating the great potential of AI in the natural sciences.

In recent years, Dr. Liu Tieyan has also led the team to actively explore the application value of artificial intelligence technology in the industry (especially in finance, logistics, medical and other industries). At present, he has led the team to deeply participate in the strategic research cooperation of leading enterprises in many industries such as Huaxia Fund, OOCL, SF Technology, Yuanchuan Telecom, Humana, etc., helping partners achieve digital and intelligent transformation.
