In the hearts of the older generation of fans, director Jim Jarmusch has an absolutely unshakable position.
The work is very personal, and even low-cost production can capture a special charm. No matter what type of story, you can find a wandering complex for life, as well as a yearning and expectation for the future.
Director Jim Jarmusch has many well-known works, including "Night on Earth", "Broken Flowers", "Only Love Eternal Life", "Strange Shadow in Heaven", "Coffee and Cigarettes" and so on. Since being shortlisted for the Cannes Film Festival three years ago with "Patterson", he has been in retreat.
Today, I would like to recommend another masterpiece by director Jim Jarmusch after three years, called "Zombies Are Not Dead". Shortlisted for the main competition section of this year's Cannes Film Festival, it is a very stylish "comedy zombie film".
The story is set on the premise of "shifting the Earth's axis of rotation". Due to the deviation of the axis of rotation from the trajectory, there are many strange phenomena on the earth -
Wild people appear in the town inexplicably, and the watch of the policeman walking well suddenly breaks. A large number of plants that should not be native appeared, and the animals suddenly became fierce.
But it's weird. No matter what the outside world has mutated into, people in small towns should eat and sleep. There is not the slightest fear that the end of the world is coming. It wasn't until about 30 minutes into the film that the moon slowly turned purple and zombies finally appeared. Eat two people in a roadside restaurant in one go.
According to the general routine, the atmosphere of zombie films should be terrifying, panicked, and terrifying, with zombies crowding into places inhabited by humans, and bloodthirsty generally killing people. The shooting method can refer to the Korean hit zombie movie "Busan Trip".
But Master Jim Jarmusch didn't shoot that way.
- The zombies under his command are not only not terrible, but also particularly leisurely. If it weren't for the fact that I saw the zombies killing people in the movie, I would never believe that the two slowly drinking coffee in the picture were actually zombies...
On Douban, the score of "Zombie Unsuitable" is only 5.7 points, which is very low. But interestingly, the high number of likes in the front row of the review is all 4 stars. Enough to prove the audience's affirmation of this movie.
Half an hour before watching the movie, the audience who did the same as the big bad reviews thought that the rhythm of the story was too slow and there was no focus on the narrative point. It wasn't until one of the foreshadowings was revealed in the second half that I felt irritable and well-intentioned.
Take, for example, the police went to the restaurant to investigate, but did not find that it was a zombie killing.
It seems that the police are incompetent, but in fact, it is laying the groundwork for the recognition that "zombies are no different from people".
They are not terrible, they are not bloodthirsty. My favorite is not to bite people's necks, but to enjoy the coffee, liquor, short skirts, wifi in the convenience store. Even if you become a zombie, you will not forget the enjoyment of life. Or even if you become a zombie, you can't escape the sinking of material desires.
Another example is the scene where the female staff of the funeral home discovers the resurrection of the dead. The female employees were not afraid at all, and killed the zombies without blinking an eye, as simple as cutting a watermelon.
All the viewers felt that the female employees would save the residents of the town. The result? Female employees infiltrate the police station to send messages to their real "home planet" and leave the earth directly on the UFO. Throwing laughter from nonsensical plots, but also throwing out the idea that "aliens will not save the earth, we can only rely on ourselves".
What's even more interesting is that director Jim Jarmusch has been making metaphors in the film, shooting all kinds of jumping plots to make the audience think while laughing.
The farmers who discriminated against blacks were the first to be eaten by black zombies, too fast to be like a tornado. A metaphor for the struggle caused by racial discrimination.
There are a lot of zombies in the town, and the police are trying to find a way to solve the zombies. Suddenly, a policewoman sees her dead grandmother in a zombie. Almost instantaneously, the police gave up dealing with the zombie and happily committed suicide to find Grandma.
Why did the policewoman decide to die?
Does this mean that she has long lost hope in life and has become a "living zombie" of the walking dead? From this plot, the director leads to what is a zombie, and what they think differently from normal people.
In addition, there are many other interesting things in Zombies Undead. For example, the magic painting style like "Country Love Story" in the opening chapter, the strange scene of the police, the town residents, and the zombies living in harmony. It is a particularly anti-routine zombie film, and the ending can never be guessed until the end.
Don't be intimidated by the low rating of 5.7 and the boredom of the first half hour!
