Their first battle in the northeast was the victory of the Defense of Benxi, which not only effectively killed and wounded the enemy, but also preserved the strength of the troops and frustrated the enemy's plan.
Xiong Shihui attacked Benxi in two ways, and the 4th column divided its troops to annihilate the headquarters of one of its divisions
At the beginning of 1946, after the Kuomintang occupied Fushun, Yingkou and other places, it was overwhelmed and threatened that "the Communist Party is no more than that" and wanted to further extend the battlefield and expand the results of the battle. Zhao Gongwu, commander of the Kuomintang 52nd Army, commanded the 25th Division from Fushun, and the 14th Division of the New 6th Army departed from Liaoyang. They are equipped with more people, and they want to attack from two sides, giving the PLA greater defensive pressure, in order to seek the opportunity to eliminate.
Although this arrangement has certain advantages, there are also many disadvantages, and the combat effectiveness of the troops will also be divided into two lines of troops. The commanders and fighters of the 4th Column were all tempered after countless battles, and at a glance they could see the weaknesses of Xiong Shihui's two large armies.
After receiving the enemy's situation, the 4th Column immediately held an operational meeting, and the meeting decided to block the enemy on both sides and encircle and annihilate the enemy on both sides. After he arrived, he began to study how to eliminate the main force of the People's Liberation Army step by step and fight a decisive battle with the communist army. Du Yuming's military command prestige in the Kuomintang army was very high, and although he was appointed as Xiong Shihui's deputy, the real power of the Kuomintang army in the northeast was in his hands. After a few days of research, he decided to attack Benxi first and Siping later. "Once bitten by a snake for ten years, I was afraid of the well rope." Xiong Shihui heard that the main force of Shou Benxi was the 4th Column of the People's Liberation Army, and du Yuming's attack on the opposite side was still desperately resisting, he was frightened by the momentum of the People's Liberation Army, and often worried that the People's Liberation Army still had a back move, and then gave him a surprise.
Therefore, when he received information that enemy guerrillas had appeared around Shenyang City, he was very flustered, afraid that the People's Liberation Army's mind was not on Du Yuming, but on taking Shenyang. He hurriedly called Du Yuming, stressing the importance of Shenyang, intending to make Du Yuming stop attacking and return to Shenyang, where he had already sent two armies to attack Siping, and now he had sent so many troops to fight Benxi, and if he encountered any more defeat, it would be difficult for Shenyang to defend.
Du Yuming did not think so, thinking that the People's Liberation Army was bluffing, insisting on attacking Benxi, and asking Xiong Shihui to pay more attention to the outside of Shenyang, without making a fuss.
After several conversations, combined with the latest intelligence, Xiong Shihui no longer said anything, but only told Du Yuming not to fall for the PLA's plan and to be careful.
