Israel study: The fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine is less effective against the Aomi Kerong strain

Jerusalem, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- A preliminary study released by the Israeli Hayim Sheba Medical Center on the 17th showed that the fourth dose of the new crown vaccine is less effective in resisting the mutated new coronavirus Omiljung strain.

The report quoted Gilly Regoff-Jokai, the head of the study and director of the Infection Prevention and Control Department at Sheba Medical Center, as saying that although the antibody levels of the Omiljung strain increased significantly after receiving the fourth dose of the vaccine, the protection provided by this antibody level could only be said to have a "certain effect" on the Omiljung strain after receiving the fourth dose of the vaccine.

Regoff-Jokai also pointed out that the Omikejun strain has a certain "resistance" to vaccines, and the vaccine is more effective in preventing the previous new crown variant strain, but it is "less effective" against Omikeron.

Israel Sheba Medical Center launched a study on the safety and efficacy of the fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in December 2021. The center's 270 medical staff were vaccinated with the Pfizer or Modena vaccine as a fourth booster. The researchers came up with these results after comparing immunity and serum data from subjects with 5,700 healthcare workers who were not vaccinated with the fourth dose.

Israeli Prime Minister Bennett announced on January 2 that the Israeli Ministry of Health has approved a fourth dose of COVID-19 vaccine for people over the age of 60 and health workers.

Recently, due to the spread of the Omiljun strain, the epidemic in Israel has rebounded sharply. According to the epidemic data released by the Ministry of Health on the 17th, the country has had 33,622 new confirmed cases of new coronavirus in the past 24 hours, with a cumulative total of more than 1.79 million confirmed cases and 8,318 cumulative deaths. Of the country's approximately 9.45 million people, about 6.67 million have received at least one dose of covid-19 vaccine, about 6.02 million have completed two doses of vaccination, about 4.4 million have received a third booster dose, and about 540,000 people have received a fourth dose of booster.
