Recently, Qingdao Women's and Children's Hospital in Shandong Province successfully performed "left femur fracture can prolong intramedullary needle internal fixation" for a child with osteogenesis imperfecta. This is the first time that the hospital has applied an extendable intramedullary needle to the fracture treatment of children with osteogenesis imperfecta.

The 2-year-old Tong Tong (pseudonym) accidentally fell while playing at home, and his parents found that his left thigh was swollen and deformed, unable to move, and the anxious family carried Tong Tong to the Pediatric Orthopedic Department of Qingdao Women and Children's Hospital for treatment.

The results of the examination showed that Tong Tong had a "fracture of the left femoral shaft".

In order to find out the "culprit" that caused Tong Tong's fracture, the doctor inquired in detail about the child's injury, past medical history and family disease history, and after genetic testing, it was finally determined that Tong Tong was suffering from osteogenesis imperfecta.

According to reports, osteogenesis imperfecta is a rare hereditary bone disease, the incidence is about 3 in 100,000, and children with this disease may suffer from minor collisions that may cause fractures. At present, there is no effective treatment for the pathogenic gene mutation of osteogenesis imperfection, and the existing treatment technology can only be symptomatic to reduce the fracture rate and improve the quality of life of children.

After many discussions, the pediatric orthopedic team of the hospital decided to use extendable intramedullary acupuncture internal fixation to treat TongTong. This intramedullary needle can be applied to the treatment of long bone fractures in the thighs, calves, upper arms, etc. And as the child grows taller, the intramedullary needle can automatically slide and lengthen, so as to increase the bone strength of the child and reduce the recurrence of fractures.

After completing the examinations and preparations, the pediatric orthopedic team of the hospital, with the cooperation of the anesthesiology department and the operating room, performed a minimally invasive operation for Tong Tong, which took only 1.5 hours, and only performed a minimally invasive surgical incision far away from the child's fracture, and the intraoperative bleeding was only 5 ml. Tong Tong recovered well and was discharged from the hospital.

Experts remind that children are active by nature, lack of self-protection awareness, and are prone to fractures. If the child accidentally fractures, he should go to a regular hospital in time. After a child is suspected of having a fracture, parents should pay attention to protecting the affected limb, avoid moving it substantially, and cannot perform operations such as massage and hot compresses without authorization to avoid secondary injury.
