On the night of December 31, 1950, on a stormy night, the 82nd Mortar of the 589th Regiment of the 197th Division of the 66th Army of the Volunteer Army was connected to the order of the superiors: the 2nd Battalion of the Regiment, from Shibayanri, interspersed with the "United Nations Army".
However, before the troops could get out of Shiba rock, they encountered frantic resistance from the enemy.
Hu Guanghua, commander of the Second Battalion, immediately led the whole battalion to launch a counterattack against the enemy on the spot, and at the same time ordered the mortar company to quickly build an artillery position and bombard the enemy stationed at Nanshan in Zhiyanli.
After the commander of the mortar company was given a new assignment, he immediately led the whole company into rapid action.
What is strange is that after they set up and debugged the mortar, they just fired three or four shells before they were counterattacked by long-range artillery shells of the US army.

The enemy's shells were much more lethal, and this bombardment was strangely accurate, and a few shells caused serious casualties to the volunteers, and many cadres and fighters such as mo jilong, the fifth squad leader, died heroically on the spot.
The situation is very serious, but the task must be completed! Fu Zhixin immediately ordered the platoons to quickly shift their positions and continue to fire shells at the enemy.
Due to the large number of enemies in Nanshan, Zhiyan, the shells of the mortar company did not take long to run out, and the personnel transporting ammunition could not pass through the enemy's dense fire network, so the shells could not be transported, leaving the whole company in a situation where there was no bullet to hit.
At this time, the enemy's long-range guns were tracked again, and the mortar company could only sit still and wait, so the company commander ordered all the squads to put away the gun barrels and gun mounts and follow the infantry.
By this time it was New Year's Day in 1951, and the sky was already bright, and the enemy infantry, under the cover of artillery and aircraft, launched a frenzied attack on the volunteers.
Faced with this unfavorable situation, Hu Guanghua, commander of the second battalion, ordered the whole battalion to quickly seize the nameless hill west of Zhiyanli, and with this favorable terrain, after gaining a firm foothold, he waited for an opportunity to counterattack.
However, there were also many enemies on the nameless mountain, and it was difficult for the volunteers to rush up. Hundreds of commanders and fighters of the battalion were exposed on the hillside, trying to avoid enemy fire on the hill and struggling to climb up.
Coupled with the steep mountain road and slippery snow, every step of the commanders and fighters is extremely difficult, and every step is a test of life and death!
They had been climbing for a full hour, and had only just reached the halfway point. By this time the road ahead had been completely blocked by enemy machine guns and could no longer advance.
Hu Guanghua immediately made a decision: The four companies swung down to resist the onslaught of the enemy on the mountain; the fifth company defended downwards to block the enemy's upward attack at the bottom of the mountain; the sixth company and the mortar company rushed to dig up bunkers in the middle of the mountain and were mobile and ready.
Hu Guanghua could not arrange this arrangement, after all, the mortar company had neither shells nor light weapons, and could only be temporarily protected.
The company commander Fu Zhixin immediately led the commanders and fighters of the whole company to dig up bunkers and repair fortifications, but fortunately they all carried shovels and t-pickaxes with them, and the task went quite smoothly.
A row of three squads of soldiers Yang Changliang was located in a small overgrown dirt bag, and when he cut off the weeds, he found an unexpected discovery- there was a circular plank hidden in the grass, which seemed to have been deliberately placed there.
Yang Changliang felt strange, and quickly called Ban Changjiang Ronggui over, and the two of them unveiled the wooden plank, and behind the wooden board was revealed a circular opening, which was black and dark, and it seemed that someone had dug a good cave.
Jiang Ronggui said in surprise, "Where is the cave in this kind of desolate wilderness?" ”
Yang Changliang was suspicious: "Will there be enemies hidden inside?" ”
"Impossible!" Jiang Ronggui said indifferently, "This cave entrance is full of weeds, obviously no one has been here for a long time." Whatever it is, you are guarding the entrance of the cave, and I will go ahead to see what is famous inside! ”
Before he could finish speaking, Jiang Ronggui went into the cave, and because the cave was very small, he could only use his hands and feet to climb in.
After about twenty minutes, Jiang Ronggui climbed back with a body full of dirt, and as soon as he came out of the cave, he said happily: "Haha, this cave leads directly to the top of the mountain, and there is an exit above, just behind the enemy's machine gun position." Let's report to the company commander and battalion commander at once!" ”
However, at this time, the enemy under the mountain launched a fierce attack, and the battalion commander Hu Guanghua was leading the fifth and sixth companies to desperately block the enemy, and Jiang Ronggui could only tell the company commander of his unexpected discovery.
Fu Zhixin was overjoyed to hear this, and immediately organized a 30-man commando team, with only 8 grenades left in the company, and marched along the cave under the leadership of Jiang Ronggui. The task of the commando was to circle behind the enemy machine gun positions at the top of the hill and carry out a surprise attack with rapid movements.
Immediately afterward, Fu Zhixin personally led most of the personnel of the machine gun company to follow along the cave, leaving only a platoon of troops to continue to contain and monitor the enemy.
Jiang Ronggui was right in saying that this accidentally discovered secret passage was indeed "winding and quiet". It took only ten minutes for the commando team to reach the top of the mountain, and suddenly appeared behind the enemy machine gun position like a heavenly god soldier.
The US troops on the mountain originally planned to "annihilate all the volunteers" in the middle of the mountain by means of up and down attacks, but they never expected that the volunteers would actually emerge from the dark passage and launch a surprise attack.
The commandos smashed all 8 grenades at the enemy machine gun position, killed and injured several machine gunners, snatched the 3 machine guns that could be used and the rifles, submachine guns, and grenades on the position, and fired fiercely at the enemy infantry who were slightly lower in position.
When there was an explosion at the top of the mountain, the enemy and we who were fighting halfway up the mountain were inexplicable and did not know what had happened.
It was not until Fu Zhixin led the machine gun company to destroy the enemy on the top of the mountain and then attacked down from the top of the mountain with the momentum of "fierce tiger descending the mountain" that the commanders and fighters of the Second Battalion of the Volunteer Army understood that the victory of our army had been decided.
In the end, the machine gun company and the second battalion joined forces to crush all the enemies of the two battalions under the mountain, leaving the nameless hill to continue to pursue in depth, all the way to the ground.
After the war, Hu Guanghua praised the surprise attack of the machine gun company for miraculously reversing the entire battlefield situation, but Fu Zhixin said: "Haha, if it were not for the soldier Yang Changliang accidentally discovering the cave entrance and Jiang Ronggui personally exploring, it is really difficult to say what kind of battle this battle would be!" ”
Later, they learned from the local people that there was an ancient temple on the top of the nameless mountain, and that the secret passage may have been used by the monks in the temple to escape. Unexpectedly, the ancient temple was destroyed in the war, but the secret passage helped the volunteer army miraculously turn defeat into victory in this battle, which was also the most peculiar example of the volunteer army in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea.
