Ferrari reportedly poached engineers from Red Bull and Mercedes

Ferrari made significant progress from the 2020 season as they beat McLaren to take P3 in the constructors' standings, ferrari's next step is to return to the ranks of championship contenders.

Arguably, their golden opportunity comes from a major change in the rules in 2022, as well as switching to 18-inch tyres, which gives all teams the opportunity to improve their ranking in F1.

As reported by Sport Milano, Ferrari has taken steps to recruit engineers from both mercedes and Red Bull teams, who will work with existing design teams.

"The backbone of the department's commitment to aerodynamic design remains unchanged from 2017, with David Sanchez leading the department and, in turn, enrico Khadr, who is in charge of the single-seat project," they said in the report. Mattia Binotto wants the personnel to remain stable because he believes the same people can still do well. However, Ferrari is not short of reinforcements – engineers from Red Bull or even Mercedes, so they are able to gain insight into what other teams are doing, their strengths and weaknesses. ”

A key feature of these new rules is the shift to ground effect aerodynamics, which has not been seen in F1 racing since the early 1980s, meaning that many ferrari engineers are unfamiliar with the concept. According to Sport Milano, Ferrari are summoning a familiar face to offer some guidance: Roy Byrne, the former chief designer of Ferrari, who helped the team win six constructors' championships and five drivers' championships between 1999 and 2004 during Ferrari's golden years.

The report added: "At Ferrari, super consultant Roy Byrne will bring the experience of the 1980s to the team. ”

Ferrari's development has reportedly been focused on the shape of the underbody and perimeter, one of the few areas of innovation where downforce and balance can be obtained.
