There are many documents documenting old Chengdu, and everyone often uses various books. Among the various books, the main ones are literary and historical writings and local history, and there are not many materials from the folk. In the folk sources, folk tales, songs and legends are commonly used. There is also a kind of less attention and use, that is, opera lyrics. The vast majority of Sichuan opera lyrics are original artists, and there are very few originals by the poet Moke (such as the famous Chengdu playwright Huang Ji'an), but some opera lyrics from the folk will be processed and polished by the literati after they are more popular. It is precisely because the original creators of the opera lyrics are all folk artists, their description of the social situation at that time in the opera lyrics is more simple and more grounded than the poetry of the literati and inkers, and it is more worthy of our attention.
In our Chengdu area, opera lyrics used to be very popular in the folk, all of which were printed by small folk engraving shops with woodcut plates on low-cost paper, and the size of the folio was as small as the current 32 open, most of which were only about ten pages. The vendor uses bamboo pieces to form a shelf the size of a large square table, which is like a window grid, supported by bamboo poles on the back, placed on the side of the street, and there is a book of opera lyrics hanging on the shelf, and on the cover is a very conspicuous opera name, most of which are Sichuan opera scripts, such as "Cut the Yellow Robe", "Empty City Plan", "Guiying Playing Geese", "Stable Fang Kui", and a few are money board lyrics, such as "Small Dishes Fighting", "Rats Telling the Cat", "Xiu Cai Crossing the Ditch", "Counting Counties". Because the printing cost is not high, the length is not large, so it is very cheap, I once bought it when I was a child, and my memory seems to be a bowl of noodle money, until the years after the founding of New China, the townships and towns still sold it, about the 1960s. I have always believed that this is one of the most important products in the folk culture market in the past. Now I see early Sichuan opera scripts in the Sichuan Opera Museum, which are basically such small and thin folk engravings.
I have seen two kinds of lyrics dedicated to rapping The history of Chengdu, and it is necessary to introduce them to all friends who pay attention to Chengdu culture.
The first is called "Sing Chengdu", which has been circulating on the Internet in recent years. As far as I know, the original engravings have not yet been seen, and the books that are circulating are collected and sorted by the late Feng Shuimu, a well-known amateur research expert on Chengdu's history and culture. In the early 1990s, he published Sing Chengdu (I can't remember exactly when and where it was published, but it was probably on an internal copy of the Chengdu Cultural Center). Later, when I saw him, I asked him for the source, and the reply in my memory was that it was based on a copy, not an engraved copy.
On September 12, 2003, the local city newspaper published an article entitled "Septuagenarians: Old Chengdu Has 108 Folk Songs", which recorded the memories of the 76-year-old Zhou Kexun, saying that he bought a woodcut old book called "Memories" in Chunxi Road in 1944, which contained 108 lyrics, and some of the words he remembered were in the "SingIng Chengdu" we introduced here. But he remembered that "good mountains are really good mountains, guns hit phoenix cannons in the sky", and they are not found in the "Sing Chengdu" we introduced here. Most importantly, the old man's rap lyrics are only 108 sentences, and there are annotations on historical allusions and stories, which is very different from "Singing Chengdu". It seems that there have been many different versions of this kind of lyrics in the past, and it would be great if any collector could contribute the original.

None of them are right, it should be the late Qing Dynasty. This is because there are already several famous fresh buildings in Chengdu in the lyrics: the Machine Bureau, which was built in 1878, the Xiangrongqiao Catholic Church, which was built in 1887, and the Keyuan Garden, which was built in 1903, on Zhonglieci Street. Therefore, the composition of "Sing Chengdu" cannot be earlier than 1903. The lyrics do not appear in Chengdu's famous fresh building commercial field, which was completed and opened in 1909. Therefore, it can be determined that the time of composition of "Singing Chengdu" was between 1903 and 1909, which was in the late Qing Dynasty.
As a folk artist's lyrics, "Sing Chengdu" is sung according to "all the way down", the content expressed is basically truthful, and tells a lot of today's generation will feel the truth of surprise, such as: Du Fu Caotang and Caotang Temple were separated at that time, There were boats on Huanhua Creek and flower boats, Chengdu used to have "Golden Horse and Biji", branch machines (original Ji, mistaken, should be machines) around the stone street There is also "forest", Ba Jin's former residence "Li Family Garden" was originally "number first", there were "buildings" on the Wanfu Bridge, Chase Bay was originally written as "Sow Bay". However, in order to be smooth, in order to listen well, it may also be that it is not so demanding in the first place, so there are some inaccuracies. The most obvious thing is that as soon as the opening is opened, "once out of the East Gate Tianya Stone", it should be "one into the East Gate Tianya Stone" (there was no new East Gate at that time, only the old East Gate). I reckon that the singer deliberately changed the word "in" to "out" in order to make the first two words yangping, which is good to listen to. In addition, descriptions such as "according to the Chasi to the West Ditch Head" and "Wolong Bridge to the Arch Back Bridge" are not accurate enough.
"SingIng Chengdu" is almost all the old Chengdu place names and old things related to the place names, if all are annotated, the length is too large, not what this article can accommodate, interested friends can refer to the humble "Chengdu Streets and Alleys", most of the problems can be solved. Here is only the last sentence of the "nine lotus flowers facing Beijing" to explain:
In the southern part of Chengdu, there was originally a string of lakes of different sizes (probably the remnants of the diversion of the Neijiang River in the late Tang Dynasty), and the important ones were the Upper Lotus Pond, the Middle Lotus Pond and the Lower Lotus Pond. These lakes still had a certain amount of water in the Qing Dynasty, but they disappeared completely during the Republic of China period, and now they still leave some place names named after this lake. In the past, there has always been a folk legend in Chengdu that not only are there lotus flowers that everyone can see in the three lotus ponds, but there are also three sacred lotus flowers hidden at the bottom of each lotus pond, which will only be exposed on auspicious and festive days. According to this legend, the lyrics have the auspicious and festive ending of "Nine Lotus Flowers Toward Beijing".
Above I said that I hope that any collector can contribute the original engraving of "Sing Chengdu" for all of us to read and study. When I was unable to see the original engraving of "Singing Chengdu", I published here an original engraving of the lyrics that I recently purchased from the Internet specifically describing the history and culture of Chengdu, "Chengdu New Jingzhi", which according to the original collectors said to be the only one in the sea known so far.
"Chengdu New Jingzhi", woodcut, the author and engraver are unknown, 18.5 cm long, 11.5 cm wide, because of the final defect, so the number of pages is unknown. The engraver puts several passages together and connects them with lyrics. For example, the two lines of singing at the end of the "Chengdu New Jingzhi" are "There is a Jingzhi, although it is observed, and the characters are listed", and the subsequent lyrics are to introduce the characters of the counties in the province, such as "Suining County, out of Guanyin, Yinshan and out of Zhao Gongming." Zitong County, out of Wenchang, outside the provincial capital Cen Penglang. Xindu County, Yang Zhuangyuan, Mianzhu out of Liu Tianguan. Xu Zhenjun, a native of Jiangxi, is in charge of the people of Deyang County. After the county figures spoke, the lyrics turned, "Mountains and rivers, waters and mountains, green mountains and green waters." Twenty-three provinces, all have mountains, southeast, northwest and northwest are related. Rivers, seas and mountains, according to Sichuan, the kings listen to me."
