The temple is located between Dongxigu, directly opposite the river bay, which is today's Yujiapu. The temple was built in the sixth year of Qing Shunzhi (1649) as a small folk temple. However, in the thirty-fourth year of Kangxi (1695), the grain shortage in Liaodong was scarce, and the Kangxi Emperor used a huge boat to send millet out of Dagukou to help Liaodong. The trip was quite smooth, kangxi thought that the sea god helped, so he allocated silver to rebuild the sea temple, and the inscription "Build the Dagukou Sea Temple" plaque. Since then, the four emperors of Kang, Yong, Qian, and Jia have all toured the Temple of Sea and repaired the buildings inside the temple. In the fifty-seventh year of Qianlong (1792), Ma Jiaerni entered Beijing for a pilgrimage from Dagukou and used it as a post office.

Tanah Lot temple is large in scale, with more than 80 houses, divided into three halls in front, middle and back. The front hall is the Temple of the Sea, and the imperial hall is Jing Hongbo. The temple is dedicated to the majestic-looking sea god with a long whip. The nave is guanyin pavilion, also known as "Wanghai Lou", 7 zhang high, the temple forehead "Chaoyin Qingfan", the roof of the high hanging lamp, specially designed for sea ships to navigate, dedicated to Guanyin Bodhisattva. The apse is the Jellyfish Hall, and the temple is dedicated to the kind-looking Mother of Water, accompanied by fish, shrimp and shellfish.

During the Second Opium War, the Anglo-French forces fought fiercely with the Qing army at Taku Kou, and the Tanah Lot Temple was destroyed. In the sixth year of Guangxu (1880), Li Hongzhang founded the Beiyang Marine Division and purchased 110 acres of land around the Sea Temple to establish the Beiyang Marine Division Dagu Dock, also known as the Tanah Lot Dock. Tanah Lot temple was enclosed in the dockyard yard. In the 26th year of Guangxu (1900), the Eight-Power Alliance invaded China, the Russian army occupied the Dagu Dockyard, and the Tanah Lot Temple was destroyed again. In 1922, the First Moon Fire destroyed the Guanyin Pavilion and reduced the Tanah Lot Temple to ashes, leaving only a ruins.

In 2007, archaeological excavations were carried out on the site of the Sea Temple in the Tianjin Shipyard, which clarified the original scale of the Sea Temple, and unearthed the white jade stele of the Imperial Sea God Temple and other architectural components. In January 2013, Tanah Lot was identified as the fourth batch of Tianjin Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Units. In March of the same year, the site of the Dagu Dock of the Beiyang Marine Division was identified as the seventh batch of national key cultural relics protection units.
