Jilin Hero Praise - Chen Hanzhang

In Wangou Village, Jingpo Township, Ning'an City, Heilongjiang Province, there is a song and ballad that has been passed down to this day: "The water of Jingpo Lake is clear and bright, next to a green pine standing next to the lake, drinking the water of the lake reminds of the hero Han, and when you see Qingsong, you can't forget the general Chen Hanzhang." "More than eighty years ago, Chen Hanzhang, commander of the Third Front Army of the First Route Army of the Northeast Anti-Japanese League, fought fiercely with the Japanese and the puppets here, and martyred the country. Today's "Praise of Jilin Heroes" column takes you to relive the heroic deeds of General Chen Hanzhang, the "Hero of Jingpo".

In 1913, Chen Hanzhang was born in Banduhe Village, Dunhua County. In 1932, at the age of 19, Chen Hanzhang threw himself into the pen and joined the Anti-Japanese Volunteer Army. In the same year, he joined the Communist Party of China, and under the direct leadership of Zhou Baozhong, Wang Detai, Yang Jingyu, and Wei Zhengmin, he led his troops to carry out guerrilla warfare in Ning'an, Dunhua, Jiaohe, and other places. In 1939, Chen Zhanghan was appointed as the commander of the Third Front Army of the First Route Army of the Northeast Anti-Japanese Alliance. Under the extremely severe situation of struggle and extremely arduous survival, he maneuvered and flexibly to defeat the Japanese and puppet encirclement and annihilation, and the enemy called his troops in horror the "most conspicuous" "powerful bandits" in their activities, and were praised by people as "mirror heroes". On September 24, 1939, Chen Hanzhang led 500 anti-coalition fighters to set up an ambush at the Hanliang Ridge in the west of Dunhua, giving a devastating blow to the "Matsushima Yukichi Crusade".

The Matsushima Yukichi Crusade was composed of soldiers drawn from the First Division of the Kwantung Army and had strong combat capabilities. The entire ambush lasted more than two hours, killing more than 100 enemy soldiers, and this battle has also become a classic example in the history of the Northeast Anti-Japanese Coalition Army. On December 8, 1940, Chen Hanzhang led his troops to encounter a Japanese siege at the head of lake in Jingpo Lake, and in order to cover the breakthrough of the fighters, he held his position and fought until the last moment, martyred at the age of 27. The enemy brutally cut off his head and sent it to the Kwantung Army Headquarters for merit. After the liberation of Changchun in 1948, the general's head was sent to the Northeast Martyrs Memorial Hall in Harbin. In 1955, it was placed in the Harbin Martyrs' Cemetery. In 2013, the Chen Hanzhang Martyrs Cemetery was inaugurated in Dunhua City, and on April 11, 2013, the remains of General Chen Hanzhang were respectfully invited back to Dunhua from the Harbin Martyrs Cemetery.
