Taiwan media: Taiwan Semiconductor Company is expected to become a key player in the automotive industry

Industry sources said that with the increasing importance of automotive semiconductors, Taiwan semiconductor companies can take advantage of the restructuring of the global automotive supply chain to become key players in the industry.

Demand for automotive semiconductors significantly outpaces supply in 2021 due to the accelerating trend of automotive electrical/electronic architecture (EEA), leading mainstream automakers, including Volkswagen and General Motors, to develop their own chips, according to Digitimes. As the importance of first-line suppliers and IDMs in the automotive supply chain gradually decreases, the influence of manufacturing companies is increasing, which provides an excellent opportunity for Chipmakers in Taiwan to enter the industry.

Sources pointed out that the traditional automotive supply chain has been disrupted by automakers and first-line suppliers who have begun to engage in semiconductor development, and the role of Tier 1 suppliers and IDM in the supply chain is likely to be significantly weakened.

Although it is impossible to absolutely grasp the future of the automotive supply chain, industry insiders believe that Taiwan semiconductor companies, especially TSMC, UMC, and the world's advanced, have great potential to become key players in the automotive supply chain.
