In July 1898, the British forcibly occupied Weihaiwei, built forts, garrisoned troops, and set up administrative offices to implement colonial rule here. As soon as these Qing Dynasty officials dressed in official uniforms arrived, they performed three kneeling and nine prostrations in the main hall of the administrative office, and it is estimated that Lockhart was a little confused. The most solemn ritual performed by the subjects of the Qing Dynasty to the emperor was "three kneels and nine prostrations", kneeling on both knees three times and prostrating nine heads.
