We know that Qianlong has never had a good reputation for writing poetry, writing more than 40,000 poems in his lifetime, but few of them have been handed down, but the poems of this song in the early Yuanmingyuan are rare masterpieces, at least we can see from his poems the most beautiful appearance of the yuanmingyuan in the past.
The Yuanmingyuan was founded in 1707 (the 46th year of the Kangxi Dynasty), the first given by the Kangxi Emperor to his fourth son Yongzheng, that is, qianlong's father's garden, in 1722, after Yongzheng succeeded to the throne, he began to expand the scope of the Yuanmingyuan, adding the Zhengda Guangming Hall and the Qinzheng Hall, as well as the cabinet and the six ministries and other administrative centers.
The expanded Yuanmingyuan has become a magnificent palace complex and a forested royal garden, covering an area of 3,000 acres, in addition to the magnificent palaces and various precious flowers and trees, there are rockeries, lakes and meandering man-made rivers, which is a paradise on earth.
After the Qianlong Emperor succeeded to the throne, the Yuanmingyuan, which had already become a large-scale garden, was also expanded again, first of all, the garden landscape was adjusted to a certain extent, and the architectural group was added to make it look more palatial, and due to the participation of foreign missionaries such as Lang Shining and others, this Chinese garden also introduced many foreign styles.
When you walk into the Yuanmingyuan, you can see a patch of white Hercules buildings, both the ancient Chinese stone carving style and the Western elegant sculpture style, so it is called the "Garden of Ten Thousand Gardens", even the French writer Victor Hugo can't help but admire: "a model of ideals and art".
However, this treasure of world architectural history was devastated by the fire and incineration of the Anglo-French coalition on October 6, 1860. In the evening of that day, the British and French forces invaded the Yuanmingyuan, and they indulged the officers and soldiers to loot and destroy at will, and millions of precious cultural relics were looted.
What is even more heinous is that after the looting, on October 18, Lieutenant General Mitchell led more than 3,500 people to the Yuanmingyuan and set fire to it, burning for three days and three nights, and this world-class masterpiece of gardens was reduced to ashes. Posterity can only see the remnants of the broken wall, and it will never return to the prosperity of the past.
In 1860, it was the beginning of the Second Opium War, the beginning of modern history. Although cameras had appeared at that time, they had not yet been popularized in China at the end of the Qing Dynasty, so no one had left a beautiful figure in the Yuanmingyuan. But before the Anglo-French coalition burned the Old Summer Palace, a British journalist named Felice Bit took several photos.
Although the photos only show the tip of the iceberg of the Old Summer Palace, they are also amazing enough that at a modern auction, this set of precious old photos was auctioned for 200,000 pounds, or about 1.75 million yuan.
This garden of ten thousand gardens wants to be restored through technology has been very difficult, first of all, the treasures that were stolen by the British and French coalition forces are now lost overseas, as for the cost of restoration, it is even more difficult to estimate, perhaps always can only appreciate the original Yuanmingyuan in some old photos, and the appearance of the Yuanmingyuan after being burned down, but also reminds future generations that only when they are strong can they not be bullied.
