Text/Huang Li Bao

From January 12 to 23, the 21st Macao City Fringe Festival, hosted by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Macao, was held in Macao, with the theme of "Breaking the Gap". The 20 stage works with different personalities launched this time were spread throughout Macao, blossoming everywhere, and everyone was an artist.

Participating in the program of this fringe festival is rich and diverse, with a broad vision and unique perspective, paying attention to the many connections between people and reality.

The three identities of people constitute the drama dance "Look at Youhan Again", which interprets the new understanding of life, community, crowd, society and the world by the residents of Youhan through art; the immersive theater work "Dance Traces" integrates the real and virtual, using the real existence space and the contrast of technology to change the space to explore the possibility of human and technological life, to extend the ripples of dreams;

The sound theater work "Homecoming" of the Edinburgh Frontier Theatre Exhibition, the audience is both the subject and the object, the viewer and the performer, narrating the journey home through the voice line and form, as well as the future touch of fate, experiencing the metaphor of inanimate; "The Feelings of Annihilation: The Sonata and Interlude of the Eight Tastes", the work presents the eight senses of Indian "taste" from music, body language and light images.

As a video exhibition, "Scenery That Never Returns" projects memory onto the image, allowing Macao to pass through the fog together with what it has lost and retained in the years, just like the documentary sharing of "Communion Art Point Planning", carving Macao images into the inner world of Macao people.

The Fringe Festival also has more moments from life, such as "I want to be scared, I want to forget the world of tweed", which is a spiritual tour in some spaces in Macao; "Flow of Flowers", let the soul flow with nature, to feel every moment of life.

More direct experiences include "Bamboo Powder Masters", which presents the scene of flour dolls made in the 1980s; "Between New and Old", a collision of magic and art, but tells Macao folk stories in an oral way; and the presence of artists is also one of the characteristics of the Macao Arts Festival.

The homogenization of life has made many things lose their diversity, but fortunately art still has an accident. "Empty - One Person, One World" at the Fringe Festival is full of unexpected imagination, the audience is placed in the empty space, improvised, and through the air connection, with Korean dancers to complete the truth of survival behind time and space;

If everyone has to be evaluated aesthetically, then he/she has to create for himself/herself, "Crazy" in the post-epidemic era combines multimedia, theater and technology, reflecting on the relationship between society and nature in the post-epidemic era, helping the public understand a life that respects nature and how to obtain its own artistic design.

Many works of the 21st Fringe Festival reflect on the ongoing "post-epidemic" era, the "isolation" between countries and people, and the trembling of this scene on the hijacking of globalization, providing a new way for the public to watch and participate.

From some of the programs of the 21st Fringe Festival, it can be seen that in the past 21 years, the Macao Fringe Festival has adhered to a cutting-edge, open and close attitude, and the return to life through art is also a kind of departure of the folk pioneer spirit. It eschews some conventions, but it is important to bring something that Macau did not have before, injecting a living force into the contemplation of social life, encouraging audiences at different times to think, and taking into account the themes of the world.
