For console game enthusiasts, the compatibility performance of new products for old games is one of the indicators of whether a product is excellent. Although in terms of overall game quality, Sony's PS may be better than Microsoft Xbox, but in terms of game compatibility, PS has a big gap compared to Xbox. On Xbox, even the earliest Xbox games can be played on the new generation of Xbox Series consoles, while the latest PS5 is only compatible with some PS4 games. However, this phenomenon may change in the near future.

A screenshot of a registered patent recently published shows that a patent with Mark Cerny (hardware architect for PS4 and PS5) as the applicant and titled "Backward Compatibility Through the Use of Spoofed Clocks and Fine-Grained Frequencies" has been filed. The appearance of the patent may indicate that the Sony PS team is developing backwards compatible technology. Although the patent does not explicitly mention any of the previous Sony PS gaming platforms, it is inferred from the name of the patent that the technology may have been applied for to be able to play old games on PS5 and PS4 to play PS, PS2 and PS3.

Sony's PS consoles have a wide audience around the world, and its latest PS5 has achieved good sales performance since its launch with a significantly improved gaming performance. As of September last year, the Sony PS5 had sold 12.8 million units worldwide and was at the top of the console sales list in many countries. If the PS5 can finally be backward compatible with old games, I believe its sales will further increase.
