The Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway is a major transportation artery connecting the north and south, with a total length of 1318 kilometers, safely transporting more than 1.35 billion passengers since its opening in 2011, with a cumulative journey of more than 1.58 billion kilometers. Initially, maintenance personnel had to climb up the catenary network along the high-speed rail track, holding a flashlight, checking for potential hidden dangers one by one, and dealing with them one by one. It takes 3 years to complete a full-line manual inspection, and new hidden dangers may have emerged before the inspection cycle is over. Later, with the help of 4C catenary detection vehicles, taking pictures instead of manual inspections, the detection time was shortened to a quarter, but it was still necessary to rely on pure manual methods to complete the analysis and judgment of each photo.

In 2017, SenseTime began to explore the application of AI technology to the field of high-speed rail catenary detection. After two years of preliminary research, the scientific research project was officially launched in May 2019, and breakthroughs have been made since then. Today, the time to complete a routine inspection has been shortened to just 4 days, and the efficiency has increased by more than 20 times. Catenary detection is also difficult from one "eye" to a successful overview.

According to statistics, the 4C catenary detection vehicle of the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway collects up to 3 million pictures of equipment every quarter. If each person needs to determine 8,000 pictures per day, it will take more than 20 days to complete the overtime work. In the face of such massive data, long manual analysis cycle, large differences in judgment standards, and quality assurance have long plagued the detection of high-speed rail catenary networks.

After applying the "Starry Sky" intelligent analysis system based on SenseTime's "Industrial Engine", with the help of AI intelligent analysis, only 2 technicians can complete the analysis of the same 3 million pictures in 10 days, and the efficiency is increased by 20 times.

Li Xiaoyu, head of the "Starry Sky" system of the China Railway Electrification Bureau, said that with the continuous accumulation of data, AI will also help high-speed rail inspections to explore predictive maintenance. Through "spatial positioning" and "one pole and one gear" and other methods, the system can accurately locate the pole number of each pillar, establish a data file, "when the part fails, we can trace whether the part has a precursor to the imminent failure and change trend, by summarizing experience, we may predict the possible failure in advance, and eliminate the hidden danger in advance." ”

With the "starry sky" intelligent detection system playing an increasingly important role, the innovative significance of AI technology in the field of high-speed rail catenary detection has become more and more obvious, which not only improves the intelligent level and detection efficiency of catenary vasculars, but also creates a precedent for China's railway power supply system to identify catenary parts defects through 4C image intelligent analysis, filling the gap in the field of 4C intelligent detection and analysis in China.

In 2021, the "Starry Sky" intelligent analysis system has completed the comparative analysis of 4C image recognition of 6 railway bureaus and 13 lines of catenary network organized by the Ministry of Industry and Electricity of the State Railway Group, achieved outstanding results, and realized the automatic detection of catenary defects.
