Led by the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and united with an international research team of 23 scientists from 14 research units around the world, the world's first report on ocean warming in 2021 was released. The new data shows that the ocean temperature will break the record again in 2021 - the ocean warming continues in 2021, and the heat absorbed by the 2,000 meters of the global ocean layer increased by 14×10 joules compared with 2020, which is equivalent to about 500 times China's annual power generation in 2020, and the warmest year for the ocean since modern ocean observation records. At the same time, the temperature in the Mediterranean, North Atlantic, Southern Ocean and North Pacific oceans all reached record highs.

The report was published in the international academic journal ADVANCES IN ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES (AAS).
Cheng Lijing, the main completer of the report and an associate researcher at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said: "China is a country that is greatly affected by climate change, and the results of typhoons and sea level rise caused by continuous ocean warming will have a huge impact on China, especially coastal cities." Therefore, in addition to the current 'carbon peak carbon neutrality' for climate change mitigation, it is also necessary to focus on strengthening the adaptation to climate change and strengthening the monitoring, prediction and response to climate change and extreme events that may be encountered in the future. ”
