There are many beautiful small islands in China's Xisha Islands, all of which are China's inherent territory, but in the last century, some countries reversed the black and white of sovereignty and forcibly occupied the Xisha Islands, and Ganquan Island was one of them.
Ganquan Island is oval-shaped, with an area of about 0.3 square kilometers, 700 meters long from north to south, and 500 meters wide from east to west. Strategically, the island is high, surrounded by sand banks, surrounded by coral reefs, and shallow waters in the southeast direction where ships can dock, in short, the island is easy to defend and difficult to attack, and it would be an excellent point to use as a military outpost.
In addition, although Ganquan Island is an uninhabited island, it is one of the few islands in the Xisha With fresh water. There are ancient wells on the island, and the well water is clear and sweet and drinkable. There are also temporary wooden houses left by fishermen on the island, and the ecological environment is very good, so it is also a good choice to use Ganquan Island as a supply point.
However, the strategic value of Ganquan Island is also coveted by other countries. Probably in 1956, the South Vietnamese sent troops to forcibly occupy Gan Quan Island, and also declared "sovereignty" to the outside world. This statement is simply nonsense, because Ganquan Island has been China's inherent territory since ancient times, for the following reasons:
First of all, as early as 1909, li Zhun, the admiral of the Guangdong water division of the Qing Dynasty, discovered Ganquan Island when he was patrolling the sea, and found that the island had two freshwater wells, and the spring water was very sweet, and there were historical records for this: "Fresh water has been obtained, food is very sweet, digging the ground is not more than The ear, Yu tastes it, the fruit is very sweet, that is, the name Ganquan Island, Le Shi Jian Mast, hangs the flag as a memorial", so Ganquan Island got its name. Subsequently, in 1935, the government of the Republic of China declared the name of the island Robert Island, and in 1947, the government of the Republic of China declared the name of the island Ganquan Island.
Secondly, from the perspective of the island's history, the archaeological team found the living sites of the Tang and Song dynasties on the island. Among them, there are 13 temples stacked with stones, more than 50 pieces of daily ceramics of the Tang Dynasty, and several historical relics such as Song and Ming Dynasty copper coins. However, in the face of ironclad evidence, South Vietnam did not retreat from Ganquan Island, so in 1974, the Chinese People's Liberation Army launched an attack on Ganquan Island by ship with 3 companies, 1 amphibious reconnaissance team, and militia, totaling more than 500 people. Soon, the South Vietnamese garrison on the island escaped by ship, and GanQuan Island, which had been occupied for 18 years, was able to return to the embrace of the motherland.
Today, Ganquan Island is no longer an uninhabited island, administratively under the jurisdiction of Sansha City in Hainan Province, and there are not only residents on the island, but also tourists who often visit it.
