According to the "Chronicle of the Three Kingdoms Pei Zhu - Guan Yu Biography", Guan Yu asked the soldiers to bring wine and meat, and there was a chessboard on the wine table, calling for the auxiliary army master Ma Liang, eating and drinking while playing chess with Ma Liang, and then extending his left arm to open the wound, laughing and telling Hua Tuo that he could start the operation. Gao Kaidao has been cooking salt for generations, and when he was a teenager, he was extremely brave, and it is said that he can catch up with war horses when he runs. At the end of the Sui Dynasty, with heavy taxes and natural disasters, Gao Kaidao defected to Geqian's Douzigang rebel army, and later the leader Geqian was defeated and killed by Wang Shichong, and Gao Kaidao led the remnants of the Douzigang army to capture Beiping, and ran rampant in the north to claim himself "King of Yan". In a campaign against Youzhou, Gao Kaidao was shot in the cheek by a random arrow from the head of the city, because the arrow was deeply stuck in the face bone, affecting Gao Kaidao's vision of commanding the operation. Gao Kaidao ordered Mingjin to return to the camp and wait until the arrows in the face bone were removed before attacking the city.
The process of the operation was recorded in the "Zizhi Tongjian": after returning to the camp, Gao Kaidao immediately ordered the military doctor to draw the arrow, and the military doctor looked at Gao Kaidao's wound and said that the arrow was stuck too deep in the face bone and could not be pulled out, and Gao Kaidao ordered the military doctor to be pushed out and beheaded. Later, Gao Kaidao found a military doctor, who also said that the arrow was too deep to pull out, and Gao Kaidao also beheaded the military doctor.
After witnessing the fate of the first two military doctors, the third military doctor told Gao Kaidao that he could pull out an arrow, but it would be very painful. Gao Kaidao said that if you can pull out the arrow, it doesn't matter if it hurts or not, you can pull it boldly. Terrified, the military doctor first scraped the flesh of the skin on Gao Kaidao's cheek, then used a hammer to chisel the cheek bone under the flesh, then supported the broken cheek bone with a wooden stick, and finally took out the arrow stuck in the bone.
