Sending Shen Zhongju into the Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Liu Guo)

Ten years of lead linden sideburns autumn, hugging into a book to travel around the world.

The people of the Three Kingdoms should have dreamed that a public case had begun again.

During the Three Kingdoms period, there were many characters who did not have personal biographies, but were scattered in the biographies of others, so they did not have too high popularity. After all, the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" only has sixty volumes, of which a part must be given to the emperors, concubines, and clans of the three regimes of Cao Wei, Shu Han, and Eastern Wu, and it is conceivable how many people did not have a legend during the Three Kingdoms period at the end of the Han Dynasty. And these characters could have had personal biographies, just like Sun Shao, the first chancellor of Eastern Wu, pei Songzhi also expressed doubts in the "Zhilin" quoted in the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", why was the first chancellor of Eastern Wu not passed on? In the end, it can only be guessed that Sun Shao has a gap with the author of the Book of Wu. Shu Han also had many characters who "lost their deeds", and there was no biography, at most a small biography was attached to the "Ji Han Fuchen Praise". It can be seen that the records in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms are indeed very scarce. The following small editor will introduce a character, he was a general from Cao Wei to the rear general, participated in the "Battle of Hexi", Cao Zhen's Cutting shu, the confrontation against Zhuge Liang's Second Expedition and Zhuge Liang's Fourth Expedition, but there is no detailed biography. This character is Fei Yao.

The First and Second "Battle of Hexi"

The Romance of the Three Kingdoms was very stingy with pen and ink, and Pei Songzhi later annotated the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which greatly enriched the content of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It can be said that many characters already have biographies in the historical materials at that time, and the information is more detailed, but they were abandoned by Chen Shou. Some of the characters who have names but no biographies in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms are often supplemented by Pei Songzhi's quotations, which can get a rough outline. However, Fei Yao could not find other information, and his place of origin and resume were completely unknown, so we directly started from the campaign in which he participated.

Fei Yao's first appearance in history should be the first "Battle of Hexi" that occurred in the first year of the Eastern Han Dynasty Yankang (that is, 220 AD). Cao Pi separated Liangzhou from Yongzhou, with Zou Qi as the assassin of Liangzhou. Probably for this reason, there were rebellions in Xiping County, Zhangye County, Jiuquan County, Wuwei County, and other places, and were finally quelled by Cao Wei (who was still in the Eastern Han Dynasty at that time). This "Battle of Hexi" is recorded in more detail in the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Wei Shu Su Ze Biography", and there is only one sentence about Fei Yao in the "Biography of Cao Zhen", "True Dispatch of Fei Yao to Break It", which seems to have been involved.

In the second year of the Cao Wei Huang Dynasty (that is, in 221 AD), the second "Battle of Hexi" occurred. At that time, Lu Shuihu of Liangzhou in the Hexi region launched a rebellion, breaking away from Cao Wei's control and blocking the Hexi Corridor. Faced with this situation, Cao Pi, who had just created the Cao Wei regime, naturally wanted to make some moves. He replaced The Liangzhou Thorn Shi Zouqi, replaced Zhang with the Liangzhou Thorn History, and gave him the space to "engage cheaply". In addition, Xiahou Ru and Fei Yao were also sent to support Zhang Jie. Cao Zhen also participated in this campaign, probably as a general, but there are very few historical records.

In fact, in the second "Battle of Hexi", according to the historical records, the most eye-catching should be Zhang Jie. Zhang did not wait for the support of Xiahou Ru and Fei Yao, and used the strategy of attacking the east and the west to advance directly to Wuwei. After Fei Yao arrived, Zhang Jian continued to attack Xianmei to the west, using the deception to lure the enemy to counterattack, and then set up an ambush to cover the enemy's rear, whether it was the control of the fighter or the specific micro-manipulation. In the battle of Xianmei, Fei Yao should also be involved.

Zhuge Liang's second cut

Fei Yao's second appearance was in the second year of Cao Wei Taihe and the sixth year of Shu Han Jianxing (i.e., 228 AD), when Zhuge Liang was in charge. The purpose of Zhuge Liang's Second Northern Expedition was Chen Cang in the Guanzhong region, which was a nail in the coffin to prevent Shu Han from entering Guanzhong. In fact, after Zhuge Liang's first Northern Expedition, Cao Zhen judged that Zhuge Liang was very likely to choose to attack Chen Cang, so he ordered Hao Zhao and others to strengthen the defense of Chen Cangcheng. As a result, in the same year, Eastern Wu won a great victory in the "Battle of Shiting" against Cao Wei, and Zhuge Liang hastily launched a second attack, but was greatly resisted in ChenCang.

According to the Wei Luo, Zhuge Liang attacked Chen Cang for twenty days, and at this time Cao Wei had already begun to mobilize his army to attack Zhuge Liang. Zhang Gao rushed from Jingzhou to Guanzhong, but zhuge liang withdrew his army before he could do so; and another Cao Wei general who opposed Zhuge Liang is mentioned in the Chronicle of the Three Kingdoms, Wei Shu, and Ming Emperor Ji, namely Fei Yao. In this battle, Cao Zhen did not personally engage Zhuge Liang. In addition, when Zhuge Liang retreated, he killed the pursuing Cao Wei general Wang Shuang. Whether Wang Shuang was under fei Yao's command is unknown.

Cao Zhen cut Shu

In the second year of Cao Wei Taihe and the sixth year of Shu Han Jianxing, Zhuge Liang carried out two Northern Expeditions, and in the following year carried out another Northern Expedition, with a very high frequency, causing some damage to Cao Wei's border areas, and also taking the two counties of Yinping and Wudu. For Zhuge Liang's Northern Expedition, Cao Wei also planned to counterattack. In the fourth year of Cao Wei's reign and the eighth year of Shu Han's Jianxing (i.e., 230 CE), Cao Wei launched a large-scale attack on Shu Han.

At that time, Cao Wei's army was roughly divided into three routes, With Sima Yi and others attacking Hanzhong from Jingzhou; Cao Zhen, Zhang Gao, and others attacking Hanzhong from meridian and chuan; and troops from Wuwei in Liangzhou. Due to the rainfall, Cao Zhen and zhuge liang did not have a large-scale war; Sima Yi withdrew his army before reaching Hanzhong; and Liangzhou was pushed back by the Shu Han army, and Wei Yan and Wu Yi led an army to defeat Guo Huai and Fei Yao in Liangzhou. It is known as the "Battle of Yangxi". In the "Battle of Yangxi", Fei Yao's official position was already that of a rear general, and Wei Yan also became a general of the Western Expedition by virtue of this victory in the independent leadership of the battle, and was given the title of Marquis of The County.

Zhuge Liang's four cuts

In the fifth year of Cao Wei Taihe and the ninth year of Jianxing of the Shu Han Dynasty (231 AD), Zhuge Liang launched the Northern Expedition again, the fourth Northern Expedition. At this time, Sima Caozhen, who had long been in charge of the war with Shu Han on the western front, fell ill and died, so Sima Yi, who was the governor of Jingzhou and Yuzhou, was transferred to Yongzhou and Liangzhou, the governors of Guanzhong. Sima Yi commanded Zhang Gao, Fei Yao, Dai Ling, Guo Huai, and others against Zhuge Liang, and Fei Yao ranked second in the historical records, second only to the general Zhang Hao of the Zhengxi Che.

Sima Yi ordered Fei Yao and Dai Ling (presumably Guo Huai) to garrison Shangyi. Zhuge Liangliu partly besieged Qishan Fort, and personally led his army north to Shangyi. Fei Yao, Guo Huai, and others invited Zhuge Liang to fight, but were defeated by Zhuge Liang. When Zhuge Liang cut the wheat from Shangyi, he encountered Sima Yi's main army. Later records are more controversial, Zhuge Liang had a great victory of "three thousand firsts", and Sima Yi had the results of "cutting off ten thousand prisoners", but both were isolated evidence (from the "Han Jin Chunqiu" and the "Jin Shu Xuandi Ji", respectively, although the "Three Kingdoms Zhi Shu · Wang Ping Biography" mentioned this battle, biased in favor of the "Han Jin Chunqiu" Zhuge Liang won the claim, but there is no record of "Jia Shou Three Thousand"). However, Zhuge Liang's defeat of Guo Huai and Dai Ling was no problem.

All in all, Fei Yao's military experience was relatively rich, twice participating in the suppression of rebellions in the Hexi region; once forcing Zhuge Liang to ensure the safety of Chen Cang; and twice losing to Wei Yan, Wu Yi, and Zhuge Liang. However, both Wei Yan and Zhuge Liang can be said to be famous generals of the Shu Han Dynasty, and Wu Yi has no biography because of his "misconduct". Fei Yao's defeat at the hands of Wei Yan and Zhuge Liang was not too shameful. Fei Yao has been active in Longxida for ten years, has rich military experience, and has been an official to the general of Cao Wei Hou, but there is no personal biography, which has to be said to be a regrettable thing.
