In 1859, John Brown decided to launch an armed uprising in Virginia, which belonged to the South, with the goal of completely eliminating slavery in the South.
On October 16, 1859, John Brown led seventeen whites and five blacks to attack Harpers Ferry in Virginia and capture the local arsenal, and the "John Brown Uprising" broke out. Upon learning of the outbreak of the uprising, the U.S. federal government and Southern slave owners immediately mobilized thousands of troops to suppress it, and the commander-in-chief of the suppression army was Robert E. After two days and nights of fierce fighting, the "John Brown Uprising" finally failed. Almost all of the insurgents, including John Brown's two sons, died, and John Brown was wounded and captured. The Southern slave owners who hated him sentenced John Brown to death and executed him immediately, while the weak federal government did not intervene or rescue him. On December 2, 1859, John Brown died heroically at the age of fifty-nine.
After the death of John Brown, righteous people, including Marx and Engels, gave him high praise, and the people of the North of the United States called the "John Brown Uprising" a "holy war". In honor of John Brown, the American people refilled a British song and created "John Brown's Body", which is the English song sung by the elderly Hu Xuefan.
