At that time, Wang Liang, who was an official in the Capital Division, had neither a mansion nor a slave, and his only wife was still working as a farmer in his hometown. Once Situ Shi Bao was on a business trip, just passing by Wang Liang's hometown of Lanling County. So he went to Wang Liang's house to see what was going on, and wanted to know why Wang Liang didn't bring his family into Beijing.
When he arrived at Wang Liang's village, he was immediately surprised, because he saw that there was not a decent mansion in the whole village. He inquired in many ways before he found Wang Liang's family. The sight in front of him made him even more incredible. Two ordinary thatched houses with fenced courtyard walls and wooden fence doors, the trees in front of the door are shaded, the vegetables in the courtyard are stacked, the water is full of tanks, and the chickens peck, which is a completely farm scene.
At this moment, a woman dressed in coarse cloth and pulling a bundle of firewood came over. Bao Hui said to her, "I am Situ Shi, and I have come specifically to get the letter and want to see your wife." But who knows, the woman replied, "I am, because I am toiling, and I have no letters." Bao Hui was really shocked to hear her answer, and quickly bowed down to pay homage.
After Bao Hui left, he spread out what he had seen and heard, and his words all expressed his reverence for Wang Liang. Later, none of the people who heard about this did not praise Wang Liang.
Of course, Wang Liang's treatment of his family in this way was not intentional to make his family suffer, but he was sincerely unwilling to become an official in the dynasty. If it were not for the forced conscription of Emperor Guangwu, it is estimated that he would not have gone to the imperial court to become an official, but spent a hard life in the village with his family.
Later, because Wang Liang worked diligently and seriously, his body could not hold up, so he wrote to ask to go home to recuperate. Because his merits were very great, Liu Xiu allowed him to leave. A year later, the emperor ordered him to be reinstated. After receiving the order, Wang Liang habitually set off.
When he passed by Xingyang, he remembered that there was an old friend of his here, so he went to visit him. But the result shocked him, and his friends actually turned him away, and even sent out a message saying: "There is no advice and strange scheme to take the big position, how to be troubled by the crumbs." A word awakened the dreamer, Wang Liang finally remembered his original intention of not going to the imperial court as an official, wrote a resignation letter on the same day, and returned to his hometown.
Later, Emperor Guangwu issued several edicts inviting him to return to the dynasty as an official, but Wang Liangjun shirked it because of his physical illness. Later, Emperor Guangwu went to Shandong to inspect, heard that Wang Liang was seriously ill, and immediately sent a special envoy to visit. That is, this time he was sick, Wang Liang did not ease up, and died of illness in his hometown.
