More than 200 years ago, the 1803 Woxian Caotang edition "The History of Rulinwai" was printed with the general commentary of the Hui Dynasty and the preface to the old man of The Idle Zhai.
One hundred and one years ago, in 1920, on the first page of the punctuation book "The History of Ru Lin" published by the Shanghai Yadong Library, the "New Narrative" written by Chen Duxiu and Qian Xuantong, the advocates of the May Fourth New Culture Movement, and the "Biography of Wu Jingzi" written by Hu Shi respectively, opened the door to modern Rulinology. It was on this basis that Lu Xun called the "History of Ru Lin Wai Shi" great.

In 1954, the 200th anniversary of Wu Jingzi's death, the first time after the founding of the People's Republic of China to hold a national commemorative conference for an ancient novelist, Mao Dun, the first minister of culture of New China and the first chairman of the Writers Association, said in the first sentence of his opening speech: "The great realist writer Wu Jingzi." Before and after this, New China set off the first wave of "Rulinology" boom.

In 1981, the third year after the reform and opening up, an academic symposium to commemorate the 280th anniversary of Wu Jingzi's birth was held in Chuzhou (after the meeting was also held in Quanjiao); in 1984, an academic symposium to commemorate the 230th anniversary of Wu Jingzi's death was held in Nanjing, and the China "Rulin Foreign History" Society was established; then in 1986, when the Quanjiao Wu Jingzi Memorial Hall was completed, the China "Rulin Foreign History" Society and Quanjiao jointly organized a national "Rulin Waishi" academic seminar, and in 1996, the international "Rulin Foreign History" was held in Yangzhou ---- Nanjing. 2001 is the 1300th anniversary of the birth of Li Bai, the 900th anniversary of the death of Su Dongpo, the 300th anniversary of the birth of Wu Jingzi, only Wu Jingzi in Beijing, the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the Ministry of Culture, and the Chinese Writers Association jointly hosted a commemorative conference at the national level in the auditorium of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and the Institute of Literature of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences held a national academic seminar. Anhui University, Quanjiao and Chuzhou have held national commemorative and academic activities respectively.
In 2011, the International Symposium to Commemorate the 310th Anniversary of Wu Jingzi's Birth was held in Quanjiao, reorganizing the new Chinese Society of Rulin's Foreign History (in preparation). The secretariat of the Society is located in Quanjiao, which has received strong support from Quanjiao and carried out its work effectively.

In 2014, an international academic symposium to commemorate the 260th anniversary of Wu Jingzi's death was held in Quanjiao, in 2015 at Peking University, a new literature seminar on "Rulin's Foreign History" was held in Peking University, in 2017, a national seminar on "Rulin's Foreign History" and Chinese traditional culture was held in Huaihua, in 2018, an academic seminar on classic dialogues "Dream of the Red Chamber" and "Rulin's Foreign History" was held at Beijing Chinese Min University, and in 2019, a national academic seminar on temporal and spatial dimensions and "Rulin's Foreign History" was held in Nanjing: academic conferences were held for consecutive years. After the meeting, more special books were published, which promoted the development of "Rulinology".
