On January 4, 1915, Chen Xilian was born into a poor family in Pengjia Village, Qianshan Mountain, Hong'an County, Hubei Province. When he was eight years old, his father died of illness, the pillars of the family fell, and life became more difficult. In order to survive, the pregnant mother had to take Chen Xilian around begging, and soon after gave birth to a younger brother.
Later, in order to subsidize his family, Chen Xilian went to the landlord's house to herd cattle, and was often beaten and scarred. In 1929, at the age of 14, Chen Xilian could no longer tolerate this life, and he resolutely decided to join the Red Army. The mother was very worried when she saw that her son who was herding cattle had not returned home for a long time, and after inquiring, she learned that her son had joined the Red Army.
After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan, the news of the Eighth Route Army's successful night attack on the Japanese airfield at Yangmingbao was published in the newspaper, and Chen Xilian's photo was also among them, and the mother burst into tears after seeing her son's photo. On December 9, 1947, Chen Xilian was already the commander of the Jinji-Hebei Luyu Field Army. The mother finally met her son, who she thought about day and night, through many inquiries.
The mother and son have not seen each other for 19 years, and they chatted all night after meeting. The next day, after Chen Xilian bid farewell to his mother, he continued to participate in the command battle. After the founding of New China, Chen Xilian served as the mayor of Chongqing Municipality, and planned to take his mother to his side to take care of him, but his mother refused, saying that she was used to living in her hometown and did not want to cause trouble for her son, and instructed her son to work well.
In 1954, his mother was seriously ill and dying, when Chen Xilian returned home, his mother had died, and he did not see the last side of his mother, and Chen Xilian felt very guilty. In 1955, Chen Xilian was awarded the rank of general, and on June 10, 1999, the founding general Chen Xilian died of illness at the age of 85. He has been a senior general of the People's Liberation Army through hundreds of battles, and even more a great hero of the people, but he only has regrets about his mother.
