In June 1935, Zhang Xingzhong followed the Red Fourth Front to march to Gannan, and a fierce battle broke out between Baozuo and the interception force sent by Hu Zongnan, and after two days and one night of fighting, most of the enemy was destroyed, and the remnants of the enemy retreated into Qiuji Temple to resist. The walls of Qiuji Temple were tall and strong, and there were more than 40 machine gun fire blockades, and our army failed to succeed in attacking several times. At this time, the enemy's reinforcements were about to arrive, and at a critical juncture, the superior ordered Zhang Xingzhong to lead a battalion to launch a strong attack. He personally led the demolition team, approached the wall under the cover of fire, blew the wall down in one fell swoop, and led his troops to eliminate the remnants of the enemy in the temple, opening the passage for the Red Army to march to Gannan.

One day at the end of 1930, Zhang Xingzhong's cousin Zhang Xingyu brought him a message and asked him to come to his home, saying that there was something to discuss. After Zhang Xingzhong arrived at his cousin's house, he learned that his cousin had asked him to come on a blind date. The woman's name was Wang Mingjia, her father was a landlord, and she accepted progressive ideas during her studies, so she wanted to join the Red Army. At that time, there were very few female fighters in the Red Army, and she was from a landlord family, so she did not achieve her wishes.
At that time, Zhang Xingzhong's cousin Zhang Xingyu was working in the Wang family and had a good relationship with Wang Mingjia. So he gave her an idea: marry the Red Army, become a family member of the Red Army, and then join the revolution easily. Wang Mingjia asked her who she married? Zhang Xingyu said: "I have a cousin named Zhang Xingzhong, who is now a platoon leader in the Red Army, and he is a year younger than you. In this way, Zhang Xingzhong and Wang Mingjia met at their cousin's house, and one night three days later, Wang Mingjia hid from his family and was taken to Zhang Xingzhong's house by Zhang Xingyu, and Zhang Xingzhong worshiped heaven and earth. However, in the middle of the night, the troops suddenly came to inform them that there was an urgent task and that Zhang Xingzhong should return to the team immediately.
Before leaving, Zhang Xingzhong said to Wang Mingjia: "I am a member of the Red Army, I can't help myself, and I will come back to see you when I have the chance."
