Although Mr. He Luting "hid" in Huadong Hospital, despite how "strict barriers" this hospital, which is famous for treating senior cadres, could not hide from the greetings, blessings and flowers that came after him at the age of ninety! The composer, who has written countless wonderful movements and is famous for his "Guerrilla Song", this time it is absolutely impossible to "guerrilla" anywhere else.

He Luting is exactly ninety years old this year, ninety years of vicissitudes!

According to the custom of Chinese to make a false birthday, last year, Mr. He Lao's birthday celebration activities can be described as "vigorous". A "He Luting Music Works Concert", let people listen, as if walking with music, through decades of Chinese history, there is tragedy, crying and silent; there is revelry, joy in color. There were many old rain and new knowledge, especially countless Tao Li disciples flocking to him, he was really happy, although he was also tired. Therefore, when his birthday approached July 20 this year, he quietly "hid" in the hospital, like an "old guerrilla".

However, his "strategy" and "tactics" can never escape the eyes of people who love him. They came with flowers and laughter. As a result, his ward inevitably became a big world of joy and a flower room...

At the same time of the day, the art salon of the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Beijing also gathered a group of people with laughter and laughter. They express themselves with musical instruments and with songs. From the "lark" on the "Jialing River" to the "lullaby" on the "party", the "shepherd boy piccolo" of a "ghostly thought", telling the "resentment and separation" between Shanghai and Beijing...

Thanks to the modern communication equipment, the voice hotline in Beijing was faxed to He Luting in the ward. And Elder He's thanks flew over the capital on the wings of the electric wave. He thanked the people who cared about him deeply, and said: "Everyone braved the scorching heat to celebrate my birthday, but I really didn't dare to be..."

Many years ago, the young He Luting was thrown into prison for the revolution. In prison, he once occupied a poem "Huan Xi Sha" to speak zhi, and the last sentence of shangque was: "I don't know where my home is." The first sentence of the lower que is: "Good dreams are welcomed with affection." Tonight, in Elder He's dream, in this dream made in the hospital, with so many lovers accompanying him, can he still find his way home?

His home, empty, like a warm nest, awaited his return. The greenery and the sound of cicadas in the courtyard, as well as the flowers of the four seasons that he loved, were waiting for the old man who had taken the ninetieth year of his life.

His deafness has always made him look like he is laboriously wearing a hearing aid and listening carefully to what others are saying. The nickname "Hard Bones" that he used to enjoy is still closely following him. He was still uneven, in The Hunan Mandarin with the smell of chili peppers. He still loves music and is angry at the proliferation of bar music. He is who he is. You may say that he is almost biased, but this kind of persistence can make people feel a kind of personality weight.

He Luting's greatest concern is the major affairs of the country. In 1988, he said sincerely at a meeting: "I am old, I am going to die." Mobility is no longer convenient. I want to quit the CPPCC Standing Committee and retire to the end. The CPPCC cannot exhaustively let people who can't walk on eighty years or the road do it, but it must let people who can do practical things. I can't eat a vegetarian meal! However, he did not "hide" from this small building to become a unified. He listens to the news every day, reads a variety of newspapers, and he remains politically adept. He is not only a successful musician, but also a sixty-nine-year-old comrade in the Communist Party of China, so it should be understandable that he is widely respected inside and outside the party.

He Luting insisted on writing his memoirs and diaries every day, and all of this, like the musical works he dedicated to future generations, will be the continuation of his life. He had recently re-read Tang poems and Song Ci, and was still reading Zhang Guotao's Memoirs, both of which made him think about it.

"We are all sharpshooters, and every bullet destroys an enemy", and together with Elder He, we destroy all kinds of enemies, including disease. "We are all flying troops, even if the mountains and rivers are high and deep", we and The elder General He sang and marched, and the farther we went in life's journey, the more unswerving...

The night sky of Shanghai is today a musical score, and the stars are flowing immortal melodies.

He Luting and He Peizhen in courtyard No. 4, Lane 76, Tai'an Road (spring 1956)

Supplement

On January 2, 1930, "He Ruping", the protagonist of the Jiangsu High Court's Gaozi No. 359 Criminal Judgment, was released from prison in Nanjing. Fortunately, his nephew He Dixin, who teaches in Xuzhou, sent 30 yuan, and he was able to buy a ticket and go east to Shanghai. He Ruping, also known as He Luting, this year, was 27 years old.

According to Shi Zhongxing's Biography of He Luting, He Luting's first residence in Shanghai was upstairs from a small shop in Chongrenli on Ganshi East Road (now Jiashan Road). This is a place where his classmate Liu Jiming, who was at Yueyun School in Hunan Province, rented for 6 yuan a month. Liu has been a music teacher in his hometown for several years, and with the 200 yuan he earned, he wants to apply for the National Shanghai Music College. He encouraged He Luting to also apply for the exam together.

At present, there is a clear description of He Luting's life trajectory, one is Shi Zhongxing's "Biography of He Luting" published in 1989, and the other is He Luting's daughters He Yiqiu and He Yuanyuan's "My Father He Luting" published in 2003. The former was published ten years before the death of the owner, and it is believed that the material interview should have started earlier, so the "Biography of He Luting" should be convinced thanks to the recollection of the owner himself. The latter is the daughter of the master, and although it was published a little later, the historical facts written should not be taken lightly.

On June 12, 2021, I walked west from Zizhong Road along Fuxing Middle Road to Jiashan Road to visit Chongrenli. A row of two-storey buildings along the road in Chongrenli is still there, and the first floor is still dominated by various small shops, with house numbers ranging from 55 to 81. Chongrenli's door number is in the middle, Lane 69. The door head is still there, but the door that should have the word "ChongrenLi" is covered with white lime and empty. Talking with a few cool residents of Longtangkou, they were about 50 or 60 years old, and they could still remember the rows of small shops in the early years, including pharmacies, clothing shops, tiger stoves, and so on. To my surprise, they didn't even know that there was another big name "Chongrenli" in Lane 69, Jiashan Road.

Regarding Liu's residence, He Yiqiu said that it was different from Shi Zhongxing:"After my father was released from prison, he came to Shanghai with the support of his nephew who was a middle school teacher in Xuzhou. His father found Liu Zemin, a classmate of Yue Yunyi who was studying at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, who rented a small house upstairs in a tailor's shop at the intersection of Jianguo West Road in Yueyang Road, Shanghai, where his father slept on the floor. Shi said that "Chongrenli on Ganshi East Road (present-day Jiashan Road)" and He Yiqiu said "Present-day Yueyang Road jianguo west road junction", which are slightly farther away. But what He Yiqiu said was also correct, because in the biography of He Luting, it was said: "Liu Has ming prepared for the exam and moved his family to Jianye. He Luting also lived in the past, and wrapped up the work of buying vegetables and cooking. ”

He Yiqiu said that the "present-day Yueyang Road Jianguo West Road Junction" is Jianye Li, but it skipped Chongren Li on Ganshi East Road (now Jiashan Road).

Liu Zemin himself in the article "Remembering Lu Ting in Shanghai", the recollection of the past may be more detailed: "Soon, Brother Lu Ting found my place of residence, and I was both surprised and delighted to understand his unfortunate experience, it turned out that he had only come out of Nanjing Prison and had a difficult life. Without any hesitation, I invited him to live, eat, study together, and rent a larger house; I remember that the rent of the house was 6 yuan per month for Guangyang. Rented another piano for 10 yuan a month. I go to school a few times a week for theory classes and two piano lessons. Every day, Brother Lu Ting practiced the piano, read books, read newspapers, cooked meals, and so on in his room. ”

He Luting also has a text on that paragraph, but briefly: "In February, I went to Shanghai to borrow a friend Liu Binghua, when Liu Mingming, a classmate of Yueyun Art College in Hunan Province, came to Shanghai to apply for the Shanghai Music College, I moved to another place and worked as a teacher at Ximenli Private Primary School on Ximen Road. This year, I wrote two books, "Children's Music" and "Children's Opera", published by Beixin Bookstore, and after receiving a manuscript fee, I had some money and was ready to apply for the Shanghai Music College. In February 1931, he was admitted to the Phonology College, where he studied composition and piano, while teaching at another private elementary school to support himself. ”

The next residence he Luting moved from Liu Zemin was No. 4 Ximenli, Ximen Road (now Zizhong Road). He found a job at a private elementary school with a monthly salary of $25. The name of this primary school, "He Luting Biography" is clearly defined as "Shanghai Primary School", and He Yiqiu calls it "Ximen Primary School".

He Yiqiu said: "Later, there was a Ximen Primary School in Ximen to recruit teachers, and my father applied for a job. The principal's name was Qu Bohua, and he rented two lane houses to run a private school. There were only three teachers in the school, and he agreed to his father's application to make him a teacher in the primary class with a monthly salary of 25 yuan. In this way, my father had a career and moved out of Liu's house to live in the attic on the school's sundeck. ”

The door number in the West Gate is the original Lane 380 of Zizhong Road, which has been demolished, and the original site has been transformed into a high-end real estate called "Huafu Tiandi". Ximen Li's appearance before his death was about similar to that of Xichengli and Fengyuli, who were still alive across the road. There are many stories in Ximenli, such as during the third armed uprising of workers in Shanghai, Zhou Enlai often came here for meetings; Zhang Daqian Kunzhong lived in No. 17; Ai Qing and Li Yang came to Shanghai from Hangzhou, and initially settled in Ximenli; after Hu Yefeng's arrest, Shen Congwen moved the pregnant Ding Ling from her original residence to the homes of Li Da and Wang Huiwu in Ximenli...

After Simonli, where is He Luting's next residence? He Yiqiu recalled: "In the summer of 1930, my father applied for the Violin Department of shanghai music college and was not admitted. In September of the same year, the third uncle came to Shanghai, bought some clothes and daily necessities for his father, and rented a pavilion for him on Ganshi East Road. So my father resigned as an elementary school teacher and concentrated on preparing for the exam. He Luting entered the music college in the spring of the following year and became a student of piano and harmony. In this way, the fate of He Luting and Gan Shidong Road has been twice. These two times have commemorative significance for him: the first time was to borrow the light of his classmates, settled in Shanghai, and also decided to choose music as a lifelong career here, and the second time, the goal was clearer, reviewing the exam here, and fulfilling his wishes.

After He Luting was admitted to the music college in the spring of 1931, Jiang Ruizhi's sister and brother came to Shanghai from Shaoyang. "Biography of He Luting": "Jiang Ruizhi, an activist who had participated in the burning of the British kerosene depot with him, and his brother also came to Shanghai to apply for the music special examination. He Luting tutored her with harmony and piano. Together with the third brother and them, they shared a three-story house at No. 15, Meihuali, Lane 62, Jupules Road (now Yongfu Road): the third floor is Jiang Ruizhi's sister and brother, the second floor is a Zhejiang classmate, his third brother lives on the ground floor, and he lives in the pavilion on the second floor. ”

This paragraph contains a lot of errors and needs to be revised. First of all, Jupparath Road is not "Today's Yongfu Road", but "Present-day Anfu Road". The name of Yongfu Road during the French Concession period was the ancient priest road. The two are not far apart, but they are two different roads. Secondly, it is also wrong to say that Mei Huali is in 62. Because, whether it is the Jupperlais Road period, or the later Anfu Road, Lane 62 is the general door number of De'anli. It's just that De'Anli has now become a time of eternal past in urban transformation. Originally, a tall building with a glass curtain wall stood.

However, Jupperlais Road or Anfu Road is indeed Meihuali, and the door number is Lane 191 of Anfu Road. From the intersection north to the south, there is a road that is not wide, leading directly to the depths of the lane. At the bottom of the lane, there are three rows of twenty-two Shikumen houses, and No. 15 is in the innermost position of the second row. For a long time, outside the window on the west side of No. 15, it should be a small vegetable garden.

According to the May 1931 advertisement "New Meihuali Call for Rent": "There are many three-storey Shikumen houses in the French Concession, such as the west head of Shanzhong Road, the south head of Jupparath Road, and the west head of MackyRie. The entrance is equipped with an iron gate, the house is sturdy, and the road is wide. Each house is equipped with a flush toilet, and the air is fresh, the sun is full, and it is close to the Zenjong road tram station, which is conveniently located. Rents start from $30 per building per month. If you agree, please contact the first family of Benri. No. 49 Nanjing Road Meihua Real Estate Company Kai. ”

He Yiqiu said: "In 1931, Sanbo sold translations of two books and rented a three-story house at No. 15 Meihuali in Shanghai for several hundred yuan in fees. The third uncle lived on the first floor, and his father was already studying at the Shanghai Music College at that time, so he moved to live in the pavilion on the second floor. My mother was not married to my father at that time, and she and my brother-in-law were also studying at the Shanghai Music College, and the sisters and brothers rented on the third floor, and the rest of the rooms were rented. Life was more stable at that time. In late May of that year, a few "bags inquired" and took out a letterhead with the words: "He XX Communist Party Central Housing Organ", and arrested the three uncles. ”

According to the biography of He Luting, "Later, the third brother was sentenced to six months in prison. A comrade arrested at the same time was also sentenced to six months in prison." He Yiqiu's "Three Uncles" and He Luting's "Third Brother" He Peizhen were originally members of the Communist Party of China, but during the Meihuali period, there was no organizational relationship. Therefore, it is obviously inaccurate to arrest people in the name of "He XX, the central living organ of the Communist Party." The final sentence was only six months, and it should not have been sentenced on the charge of "the central residence organ of the Communist Party.". It is said that in his later years, He Luting always tried to find out through the file system who had tipped off the authorities that year, but to no avail.

The most direct consequence of this incident should be that the rent of Meihuali Fifteen is unsustainable. As for the time when He Peizhen was arrested, He Yiqiu said that it was "late May", which is not accurate. Because the "Biography of He Luting" said: "When the Songhu War broke out on January 28, "the third brother was still serving a sentence." Pushing the sentence forward should not be in late May.

When was He Peizhen arrested and who was arrested at the same time? The Declaration of July 19, 1931 reported:

The Zhejiang-Shanghai Police Headquarters, according to a secret report a few days ago, said that there were many reactionary elements, hid the door number of the fifteenth house number of meihuali on the road of the French Concession, asked to send a quick dispatch officer to arrest, and so on; when Yang Fengqi, an agent from the Investigation Department, held a letter and threw himself into the special organ for arresting the house, together with the Chinese and Western Bao detectives, arrested He Wenlin and Ye Lanshan by the address, and copied a variety of reactionary documents, took them into the arrest room, and transferred them to the headquarters for investigation.

In this way, He Peizhen (i.e., He Wenlin) should have been arrested in mid-July, and the person who was arrested was Ye Lanshan. Ye Lanshan was later sentenced to six months in prison, and later, his whereabouts are unknown. I don't know if Ye Shi is the "Zhejiang classmate" who rented the second floor of No. 15 Meihuali as mentioned in the "Biography of He Luting"? In this regard, He Peizhen He Luting Kunzhong seemed to have no memories.

Regarding the experience of this period, He Luting wrote in November 1934:

In the spring of 1931, he entered the National Conservatory of Music to learn harmony with Mr. Huang Jinwu and piano with Mr. Chakharov. In 1932, after the Sino-Japanese "January 28" War, he left school to work as a full-time music theory teacher in Wuchangyi, and translated "The theory and Practice of Harmony" by British music theorist E. Prout. In 1933, he returned to his alma mater and formally took theory as the main subject, and studied composition with Mr. Huang Jinwu. In June this year, his father died, and there was a great famine in his hometown, and the third brother also stopped his profession due to illness to recuperate. For the sake of life, I may have to temporarily suspend school, but my life journey will always be tortuous.

He Luting and Jiang Ruizhi left Shanghai in February 1932, the Jiang siblings suspended classes due to music, and He Luting was hired by the private Wuchangyin. He and Jiang Ruizhi married in Shaoyang's hometown during the summer vacation of that year. By the time he returned to Shanghai, it was the autumn of 1933.

In the spring of 1934, he moved from Dunheli on Ladu Road (now Xiangyang South Road) to the upper floor of No. 133 Remi Road (now Yongkang Road), downstairs was a carpentry paint shop, "the creaking of sawmills and the clanging of hammers ringing all day long", and apart from the two door numbers, the upper floor of No. 139 lived three young people who actively participated in the left-wing cultural movement: Chen Huangmei, Zhang Geng, and Lu Zhanqing. Lu is a classmate of He Zaiyin College, and in order to make a living, they have also contracted the teaching of a private primary school together.

Lü Zhanqing, also known as Lü Ji, later became the leader of new Chinese music. At the first session of the Wen Dynasty, Lü Ji was the chairman of the All-China Music Workers Association, and He Luting was the vice chairman (the other vice chairman was Ma Sicong). Of course, this is an afterthought. Going back to 1934, once Lü Zhanqing was targeted by the authorities, He Luting helped to go to the cigarette paper shop downstairs of No. 139 to inquire whether there was Lu's letter, so he was also targeted. Therefore, He Luting and his wife moved to the upper floor of Wang Chunsheng's tailor shop at No. 84, Ladu Road (Xiangyang South Road) that night.

During the summer vacation of this year, He Luting saw the notice of the Russian-American composer and pianist Qi Yupin "Soliciting Piano Songs with Chinese Flavor", and he wrote three piano sketches "Shepherd Boy Piccolo", "Lullaby" and "Thinking of the Past" on the now-vanished Building 84. This has become He Luting's famous work and masterpiece. He Yiqiu recalled: The hut upstairs at No. 84 was "small and unventilated, and it was too hot to enter the house in the summer." My father had to climb from the sun to the roof early in the morning before the sun came out, and sit on the roof to write. ”

My visits to several of He Luting's former residences were actually fieldwork. Through on-the-spot observation, talking with residents, and consulting the surviving historical texts, the two time spaces are compared, superimposed, and combined, so as to restore the historical scene of the transmission activities as much as possible.

For He Luting's former residence, I visited Four Times Tai'an Road Lane 74 (extant), Anfu Road (former Ju polais Road) Meihuali No. 15 (extant), Zizhong Road (former ximen road) Ximenli (non-existent), Jiashan Road (formerly Ganshi East Road) Chongrenli (extant), Xiangyang South Road (formerly Ladu Road) Dunheli (extant), Yongkang Road (formerly Remy Road) No. 133 (extant), Xiangyang South Road (formerly Ladu Road) No. 84 (non-existent) and Yueyang Road, Jianguo West Road Junction (formerly Qiqi Road, FukurokuRi) in the Jianye (does not exist).

In September 1930, He Peizhen came from Hebei to Shanghai and lived in "Lafayette Road Happiness", and the "Biography of He Luting" said that at this time, He Luting, in order to fully review the examination, resigned from the teaching position of Ximenli Primary School and moved into "Lafayette Road Happiness" to live with his third brother. Soon, in order to let He Luting have a better learning environment, He Peizhen rented another pavilion for He Luting on Ganshi East Road. La (translated as "spicy") Fei De Road, that is, the present Fuxing Middle Road, does not have the place name of "Happiness Li". No. 1420 Huashan Road, which is not far from Fuxing West Road, has a happiness, but there is no confirmation by the parties concerned, and they dare not be presumptuous.

The name of Jianyeli at the intersection of Yueyang Road and Jianguo West Road (formerly Qiqi Road and Fululi Road) is still there, but after most of the demolition, the building was rebuilt according to the original appearance, and it is still named "Jianyeli". In the end, in fact, it is only the preservation of its name, and now "Jianyeli" is no longer the original "Jianyeli". Therefore, among the options of "existing" and "not existing", "non-existent" should be selected.

After the Founding of The People's Republic of China, He Luting's family lived in a garden villa at No. 4, Lane 74, Tai'an Road ,also known as "Yicun") in Shanghai from about the late 1950s. This was the longest residence of He Luting in his lifetime, until his death in April 1999.
