CentOS Linux 8 reaches the end of its life cycle

Today is the day when CentOS Linux 8 reaches the end of its life as a free alternative to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8. A year ago CentOS/Red Hat announced that they would shift their focus to CentOS Stream as a new upstream for Red Hat Enterprise Linux to move forward.

CentOS Stream has begun to take shape this year, but unfortunately, it means the end of CentOS Linux 8.

As planned, today is the EOL (End of Life) date, which marks that CentOS Linux 8 is no longer being maintained. RHEL 8.5 completed the final build last month, and no updates to CentOS Linux 8 will be released.

CentOS encouraged CentOS Linux 8 users to switch to CentOS Stream 8, and even now images of CentOS Stream 9 have been released to cater to those who want more cutting-edge technology.

Users can also switch to Alma Linux or Rocky Linux if they don't want to pay, two new alternatives in the EOL plan announced last year. In addition, Oracle Linux and Red Hat have been offering free RHEL licenses to developers and those with small-scale deployments.
