In 1785, Qianlong was 74 years old. Due to the success of the strategy of closing the country to the outside world, the country was still a beautiful scene of the feudal era of peace and prosperity, peace in Guotai, and abundant food and clothing for the people. As everyone knows, the West is already in full swing with the Industrial Revolution, and the United States, which is far away in the Americas, has completed the War of Independence.
Since Qianlong had heard about Kangxi's Thousand Sorrows Banquet when he was a child, he also hoped to hold a successful banquet, one was to wish for his birthday, and the other was to raise the people's style to a higher level, leaving a good political environment for the next Jiaqing to ascend to the throne. Therefore, he gave notice to the imperial dining room for half a year in advance and began to prepare the feast of the Thousand Sorrows.
On the day of Qianlong's birthday, the Feast of the Thousand Sorrows was held as scheduled. The people were also very popular, and the old people who were over 60 years old in the capital, but all the legs and feet were still flexible, all came to participate. There are 3,000 people, and some people may think that 3,000 is a bit less, but in that era when medical technology was not developed, there were 3,000 people over the age of 60 in a city, which was already quite OK.
Moreover, there was an old man named Guo Zhongyue, who was already 141 years old at the time, according to records. His ability to come to the scene shows that Qianlong at that time still had a very good status in the hearts of the people.
Qianlong set up a total of more than 800 tables, everyone also ate very happily, after drinking and eating, Qianlong also gave each old man a reward of one hundred and two silver. Originally, it was a happy ending, so why did the old people go home and die one after another? Is there poison in the dish?
It turned out that because Qianlong was too enthusiastic, each table prepared quite a lot of dishes, it was the fourth day of the first month of the new month, the weather was too cold, plus a total of more than 800 tables. As we all know, when encountering such a feast with a particularly large number of tables, the speed of serving is quite slow. At the time, there were no tools to heat the dishes.
Coupled with the feast of the Thousand Sorrows, only Qianlong moved the chopsticks, and others dared to eat it. This means that the dishes must be served. By the time the dishes were served, it was already cold for a long time. The old man's stomach was not very good, the cold day waited outside for so long, feel not cold and another said, cold vegetables to eat into the stomach is a burst of overturning the river. Therefore, many elderly people can't afford to get sick after they go back and die one after another. Qianlong himself did not expect that good intentions had done a bad thing, and in his later years he had been blaming himself. And this feast was also the last time held by the Qing Dynasty, after this, the Qing emperors such as Jiaqing, Daoguang and Xianfeng, who succeeded to the throne, all learned their lessons, and no one ever held a thousand feasts.
