When the hot exhaust gases emitted by aircraft engines cool in the air, they quickly condense to form tiny water droplets, and if the air temperature is low enough, the aircraft clouds may also be composed of tiny ice crystals, which can form visible clouds in the sky. Depending on the temperature, humidity and other factors that form the airspace, such clouds can remain in the air for as little as a few seconds and as long as several hours. Such clouds, which last longer, are called "persistent wakes" and slowly spread over time into cirrus and altocumulus clouds that are several kilometers wide and two to four hundred meters high, affecting the local atmosphere.
