Dutch distance runner Hassan was recently named the Best Female Athlete of the Year 2021 in the Netherlands (the second time to receive this award), but she was unable to attend the award ceremony because she tested positive for COVID-19 (asymptomatic).
This year, Hassan's performance has been very strong. She first rewrote the women's 10,000m world record (29:06.82, later refreshed by Gidey to 29:01.03), then won the double gold medal in the 5,000m and 10,000m at the Tokyo Olympics, as well as the bronze medal in the 1500m.
In an interview, she said she would challenge the full marathon in 2023.
