Tan Sitong was one of the participants in that major ideological enlightenment movement, and he was unfortunately killed after the failure of the law change activities, becoming a paver of ideological enlightenment. Tan Sitong's sentence before his death, "Have the heart to kill thieves, unable to return to heaven, die where they want, hurry up and hurry up", so that many people with enthusiasm for serving the country are full of grief and indignation in their hearts, and his death has greatly accelerated the pace of ideological enlightenment, so that more and more people feel a sense of crisis, and they all know that if they do not change, they will be slaughtered. Tan Sitong did not die in vain, and his efforts were not in vain.
Tan Sitong was arrested at the Liuyang Guild Hall because of the failure of the change of law, and was thrown into prison. At that time, Tan Sitong already knew that he had touched the interests of some people, and they would not let go of their own. So Tan Sitong was not idle in prison, and he turned his full of grief into a deafening sound. The walls of the prison where he was located were full of poems he carved, "I smiled at the sky from the horizontal knife, to leave the liver and gallbladder for two Kunlun" This is how arrogant it is, Tan Sitong has never been afraid of death, he is only afraid that he has not died properly.
Although Tan Sitong was not afraid of death, people outside the prison were very worried about his safety, and his wife Li Yan was one of them. She was also present when Tan Sitong was arrested, and he saw that her husband was taken away but there was nothing she could do, and she could only think of a way to see if she could make Tan Sitong live by buying the jailer. So she cobbled together five hundred taels of silver and secretly handed it to the jailer guarding Tan Sitong, hoping that he could operate from it, and after rescuing Tan Sitong, there was another generous reward.
But the jailer was not stupid, he was not willing to take such a big risk to put himself in a dangerous situation, he not only refused Li Yan's request, but also took five hundred taels of silver for himself. However, the jailer finally agreed to let Li Yan see Tan Si on the same side, but only gave her an hour. Li Yan knew that there was no hope of saving Tan Sitong, so he hurried inside to visit Tan Sitong, hoping to take this opportunity to leave Tan Sitong's descendants to inherit the incense, because they still had no children. But Tan Sitong refused, saying that if their children were born in an era when there was no hope in sight, then he would rather have children than come into the world.
Tan Sitong is not afraid of death, he also told his wife not to be sad because of his own death, as long as his death can awaken countless people, he will be satisfied, and he does not regret it. So in 1898, Tan Sitong, who was only 33 years old, passed away, and his death was as he wished, and his words before his death were also admired.
