Qi Baishi's drawings always have some detailed notes, such as how to color the different positions of a bird, the legs of a small person can be two inches shorter, and a flower should draw several petals. Swinging the sword every day, gathering points into lines, and gathering lines into spaces, a world of oneself is becoming more and more perfect, and cannot be destroyed by the outside.
On the edges of some outlines he also notes a lot of words of this kind of pen method: the pen pier to this side, the tip to this side, the smooth pen, the tip to this side, and so on.
Qi Baishi noted many words in his sketches, such as the eagle's "hind legs should be three points longer", and the claws "extremely dense horizontal stripes"... The crane's "head should be slightly longer", "the foot should not be longer", "the black hair should be pushed down five inches here" and so on.
Qi Baishi's painting theory is probably best known for what he proposed: "The magic lies between similarity and dissimilarity, too similar to kitsch, not like deception." This has become an aesthetic principle of modern Chinese painting in pursuit of "god-like" (especially freehand painting).
This means that the depicted object (color, shape) cannot be different, nor too similar. Unlike the viewer who cannot understand and understand the meaning of the painting, it is equivalent to deceiving the world; paintings that are too similar and too tacky and too straightforward have no taste and cannot give the viewer room for recollection and reverie.
However, this "god-like" is not just a few simple strokes can be sketched, behind this seemingly "simple" is the perception and grasp of art, is to learn from the ancients, their own pondering and experience after the calm and skillful, more surprising is Qi Baishi's extremely serious attitude towards the image, which many people can not imagine. In his miscellaneous notes in the poems of Shiraishi, who was sixty-three years old, it was written:
"Whenever everyone paints, they must have something in their chest to see first, and then they must have a god in their pen." Ancient and can take bamboo light to take bamboo shadows, big polyester taste Qingxiang, can be empty for eternity. The painter paints, concentrates on the forgery of the predecessors, opens his mouth to speak of the Song and Yuan, the painting is not seen, the shape seems to be unreal, how can it convey the gods?
