To celebrate the 22nd anniversary of Macau's return to the motherland, MGM and Guangzhou Song and Dance Theatre jointly created a large-scale technology folk dance drama "Awakening Lion MGM", which was shockingly premiered at MGM COTAI on the 19th. "Awakening the Lion MGM" is the first resident performance of the Guangzhou Song and Dance Theatre in a city outside the mainland.
The dance drama makes full use of MGM Theater's top technology and its world's largest permanent indoor LED display, in the form of a combination of real scene and virtual, and then integrates the intangible heritage traditional elements of awakening lion, Southern Fist and dance, bringing refreshing visual impact effects and boldly and innovatively showing the essence of Lingnan culture. The 70-minute performance was full of momentum, and the audience was full of praise, giving a very high evaluation of "the whole process is a highlight".

"Awakening Lion MGM" is based on the large-scale dance drama "Awakening Lion", the winner of the "Lotus Award" Dance Drama Award, the highest honor of Chinese dance. The repertoire is based on national awakening and traditional culture as the expression, telling the self-awakening and transformation of two lion dance teenagers in the face of love and hatred, the righteousness of the family and the country and different life choices, reflecting the indomitable spirit of Chinese sons and daughters; in order to cooperate with the performance at the MGM Theater, the dance drama has carried out all-round improvement in character modeling, video background, stage props, dance choreography, and even the use of music, casting the characteristics of the current era and traditional national spirit, and condensing the global Chinese in a new form.
In order to inject Macao characteristic elements into "Wake Up MGM", MGM and the Macao IP cartoon character "Garo Chicken" joined forces to create a rooster and olive humanoid "Garo Chicken", which was welcomed and interacted with the audience before the opening of "Wake Up Lion MGM". One of Guangzhou's intangible cultural heritage features, the chicken olive is a traditional snack peddled on the street, and it is also one of the characters of Awakening Lion MGM. As the mascot of the fusion of Chinese and Portuguese cultures, "Jialu Chicken" attracts dance drama audiences to stop and punch cards.
"Awakening lion MGM" is supported by the Ministry of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central Government in Macao, the Macao Tourism Office and the Cultural Affairs Bureau, and produced by the Publicity Department of the Guangzhou Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, the Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Film and Tourism and MGM. The first round of performances in Macau will be held from 19 to 25 December 2021, and the second round will be from 6 to 12 February 2022.
