Li Lei was born in Qingdao, Shandong Province, China, and received youth training in Qingdao. In April 2010, Li Lei, who was under the age of 18, made his career debut in the Chinese Super League on behalf of Nanchang Bayi. He has played for Nanchang Bayi (Shanghai Shenxin), Henan Jianye and Beijing Guoan, making more than 200 professional league appearances. In 2018, he won the FA Cup with Beijing Guoan. In 2019, Li Lei was selected as the best team in the 2019 Season of the Chinese Super League.
