Zeng Xiaolian once said that painting illustrations for flora accounts for 80% of his life, and his naturalist paintings add up to more than 2,000, reflecting the morphological characteristics of species, or the relationship between species and species, and the relationship between species and the environment. Zeng Xiaolian said that in order to complete the illustration of "Flora of China", many students of the Academy of Fine Arts were drawn; but the rigor of plant science painting made many students retreat, but plant science painting enthusiasts like Zeng Xiaolian insisted...
"In fact, plant science painting is more difficult than gong pen painting, is a flower 5 stamens or 6 stamens? This cannot be drawn wrong. Without botanical knowledge as a support, it is easy to make mistakes. Zeng Xiaolian said that plant science painting must be done "without a flower, without a source, without a leaf without evidence."
Originally, flora illustrations were generally black and white line drawings copied against wax leaf specimens, but the young Zeng Xiaolian believed that the illustrations should not only be drawn correctly, but also sketched in nature, otherwise there was no vitality. "The leaders and experts in the institute knew that this meant that the delivery time would be extended, but they supported my proposal." Zeng Xiaolian said that at that time in the Kunming Botanical Garden, in order to compete with the natural decay of flowers, he often did not eat, drink, or go to the toilet all morning, and concentrated on creation. He first drafted each drawing with a pencil, then showed it to the botanist, and then used the pen to ink after confirmation. This lasted for about several months, and Zeng Xiaolian's ability to paint color painting was much higher than when he joined the work in the early days.

After retirement, Zeng Xiaolian still wants to maximize the use of time and continue to paint nature with a paintbrush. According to his original idea, he would paint 100 flowers, 100 birds, and 100 beasts. The first two items have "turned in homework", and the third item Zeng Xiaolian chose to give up. Not all sites are so easy to reach. "If you haven't been to that environment, you can't see the real artemisia verstia." The magic of that kind of life cannot be felt without going to the scene. ”
Sketching and collecting specimens in the wild is more difficult than people can imagine, and "close contact" with ants, ants, wasps, and road lice is a common occurrence. Once when he returned from collecting specimens, Zeng Xiaolian felt that his body was not right, but he fell asleep because he was too tired; when he woke up the next day, he found that many places on his body were stuck to the sheets, and there were 42 blood clots in one count. "That was the most bitten I've ever had an ant." Others are often surprised to hear it, but Zeng Xiaolian smiled, as if telling his happy past.

Nowadays, plant science drawings can be synthesized by computer, but Zeng Xiaolian still believes that hand drawing is irreplaceable. "The paintings made with computers are, after all, stiff and stiff." Now, Zeng Xiaolian is increasingly moving from simply painting creatures to painting "ecology".
