The Kuoshi Festival is the largest annual traditional ethnic festival of the Lisu people living in the Nu River. "Broad time" is Lisu, "wide" is the year, "time" means new, and "wide time" is the new year.
Due to the slight differences in customs and calendars in various places, there are differences in the time of the festival, which is basically set between the fifth day of the first month of the twelfth month of the lunar calendar and the tenth day of the first month of the following year, and is generally selected to start on the day of the dragon. There are also individual places marked by cherry blossoms to determine the duration of the "broad season".

How the Lisu people live the "broad season"
Every new year approaching, Lisu households prepare good aged wine, scoop up indica rice and glutinous rice, and prepare for the festive costume. During this period, a blessing ceremony is held, a bunch of chestnut branches are held, the dust on the ceiling is cleaned, and the mantra of avoiding disasters and seeking blessings is recited in the mouth, sweeping away the pain of disasters and diseases, and seeking happiness and auspiciousness.
At the beginning of the New Year, at the door of the house, green pine branches are planted according to the number of people in the family, and loose hair is laid in the middle of the hall house, praying for peace and prosperity of people and animals. During the festival, families slaughter pigs and chickens, and many Lisu ethnic groups gather in the sunbathing field or open land to hold unique activities such as singing, dancing, crossbow shooting, and swinging.
After more than 20 years of construction, "Broad Season" has become the largest national festival in Nujiang Prefecture, with distinct regional cultural characteristics, extending to the Lisu people living in the Nu River and various ethnic groups to display their own traditional culture such as song, dance, music, sports, clothing and food, highlighting the highlights of Lisu culture, becoming an important carrier for inheriting excellent traditional culture and forging a solid sense of community of the Chinese nation.
In August 2009, "Broad Season" was named the second batch of representative items of intangible cultural heritage in Yunnan Province. In May 2021, the "Broad Season" was named the fifth batch of representative items of national intangible cultural heritage.
