The much-anticipated Rockbund, which is scheduled to open next spring, is expected to be transformed into a new urban landmark that narrates history and looks ahead.

Rock Bund Source is located at the confluence of the Huangpu River and Suzhou Creek, bordered by Yuanmingyuan Road and No. 33 Parkland to the east, Huqiu Road to the west, Suzhou Road to the north, and Beijing East Road to the south.

Compared with the homogenization and standardization of other urban spaces, Locke Bund is rooted in a unique historical and cultural environment, which is a public environment that can shape a unique local culture.

It has always attracted attention for its historical and geographical importance, and the beginning of China's modern city a hundred years ago has now transformed into a cutting-edge community that integrates history, art and commerce, guarding and continuing Shanghai's urban memory with a new image.

In 2006, Rock Bund invited the renowned firm Dai Wei Chipfield Architects DCA to undertake the renovation of the historic building and the reconstruction of the ZhongAn Mei Feng Building.

The 11 historical buildings were built in the 1920s, namely: Guanglu Building, Guangxue Building, Asian Cultural Association Building, Zhongshi Building, Ampere Foreign Firm, Yuanmingyuan Apartment, YWCA Building, Hami Building, Xiejin Building, Lyceum Building, Lyceum Building, Zhenguang Building, which carry important urban archives.

The renovation of the old building is as old as the old, following the authenticity of history, the design retains the historical buildings on the Yuanmingyuan Road and the street style of the overall plot of the Bund Source, making the building full of vitality without changing the original regional style.

The original texture of the city has also been preserved, and it is integrated with the new design, making the texture of the entire area coherent and permeable.

Many of the 11 historic buildings have left the footprints of legendary figures.

On the afternoon of March 9, 1936, film master Chaplin met with Peking Opera master Mei Lanfang and actor Hu Die, and visited the exhibition of modern Chinese paintings participated by Liu Haisu and Huang Binhong, leaving a good story in the history of Cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries.

The True Light Building on Yuanmingyuan Road, named after the publication True Light published by the church institution, is a sister building with the same architectural style, back-to-back, and connected to the Guangxue Building, both designed by the Hungarian architect Hudak.

New people's impressions

The Lyceum Tower on Yuanmingyuan Road was identified as the site of the Lyceum Theatre, and in 1866, a timber-framed Lyceum Theater was built at the corner of Upper Yuanmingyuan Road (present-day Tiger Hill Road) and Nomen Road (present-day Hong Kong Road). On March 1 of the following year, the Shanghai Westerners Love American Drama Society, composed of Western expatriates, premiered here.

On the site of the former Asian Cultural Society Building, where the Rockbund Art Museum is located today, the earliest museum in China was built in 1874. Tens of thousands of collections became one of the important collection sources of the Shanghai Museum of Natural History, the Shanghai Museum, and the Shanghai Library. Therefore, Tiger Hill Road was originally named "Museum Road", which has extraordinary historical significance.

Xinmin Evening News and the Bund Source also have a relationship. On May 1, 1946, the Shanghai Xinmin Bao Evening Magazine was founded at No. 50 Yuanmingyuan Road, and every afternoon the Xinmin Evening News, which was full of ink and incense, was sent to the whole country from here, and the coordinate works of Chinese journalism history spread from here.

There are other news organizations along the way, such as Wen Wei Po.

Hami Building

Every outstanding city will inevitably nurture an iconic space that symbolizes the spirit of the times, accommodating and leading the city's mass activities.

In the planning of future development, Rock Bundyuan will explore the diverse collection forms of art, commerce and new technology interaction in an eclectic manner, and advocate for art to play a leading role in this community.

Whether it is the real Bund architecture, or the images about the Bund, they are containers of time, whenever we stop or stare, we will enter a journey of time, faces, places, history, memories flash all the way back and forth, as if near and far, virtual and real is difficult to distinguish.

Different from the usual "white box" space in modern art exhibitions, the exhibition "Looking Back - 9 Stealth Fragments of the Bund" opened today is presented simultaneously in four historical buildings - the YWCA Building, the Hami Building, the Xiejin Building, and the Lyceum Building.

The nine artists lead us to look back and tell the rich and unique Bund, which is composed of different individuals, lives and life experiences, which can be touched and perceived.

Same location What happened in a hundred years

As soon as you enter the main exhibition hall of more than 600 square meters on the third floor of the YWCA building, facing the door is a photograph of shanghai history in 1925 collected by photographer Xu Ming.

Interestingly, the scene taken and viewed in this photo is exactly the same position we are in today's feet and looking out of the window.

"A hundred years later, you and I are still here, looking out the window again to see what has happened in the past hundred years and what has been left behind?" Xu Ming said.

How many stories are there in the same space

On the first floor of the Xiejin Building, the works of photographer Lu Jie occupy the entire space.

Nearly 40 years ago, Lu Jie began to use various means to aerial photograph Shanghai, and the photographs he exhibited led the audience to examine the city's changes from an overlooked perspective.

He also borrowed film techniques to shoot environmental portraits of two famous Shanghai writers, Sun Ganlu and Shen Hongfei, in the Bund source area before the renovation.

Another exhibition that occupies the entire space is Szeto Jiayi, whose work is exhibited in the Lyceum Building, which recounts her personal family story with narrative space and dance images.

Same block Two cultural and artistic routes

Curator Shi Hantao introduced that from the source of the Bund to the entire Bund area is the birthplace of Shanghai, a modern city, and also witnesses the evolution of the city's modern and contemporary history.

Time and history are like water in this land, playing the stories of countless people, no lack of hardship, loneliness, but also show the enterprising and endless vitality.

Shen Zhonghai's "2009 Bund Source Repair Documentary"

Until March next year, the Bund will continue to hold some exhibitions related to urban space and historical districts, forming two cultural and artistic routes that echo and complement each other with the academic art exhibition of the Bund Art Museum not far away.

"In the future, the entire renewal plan of the Bund source will be more integrated with the surrounding environment." Shi Hantao said.
