In 1955, geological exploration of the Songliao Basin in northeast China began. In September 1959, the "Daqing Oilfield" was discovered in the Songliao Basin. In February 1960, the central government decided to conduct an oil exploration and development conference in the Daqing area of Heilongjiang Province. The battle received strong support from all sides of the country.

After more than three years of hard work, by 1963, China had discovered and built a large oil field with an annual output of 6 million tons of crude oil at a high speed and high level. By the end of 1965, China had achieved full self-sufficiency in domestic consumption of crude oil and petroleum products. Among them, the high-yield crude oil provided by Daqing Oilfield has played a decisive role.
In 1964, the Party Central Committee and Mao Zedong issued a call for the whole country to celebrate the anniversary of industrial science. The dissemination and popularization of Daqing's experience has played a positive role in invigorating the spirit of self-reliance and striving to be stronger among the people of the whole country and in promoting the development of the cause of socialist construction.
