The family sits idly and the lights are amiable.
The bed was unpacked and straw was laid. To wash the tent, pick up a good sunny day and dry it on the same day. Shabu's tent, hanging in the yard, was far away in the summer. The straw was packed in a cloth sleeve, coarse cloth, and the size of a bed. It is paved with straw, steaming, warm, and has the smell of straw, which makes people feel happy.
But it was still cold. Winter in the south is worse than in the north, and there is no fire in the house. At night, I took off my cotton coat, slipped into the cold quilt, got up early, put on the cold cotton jacket and cotton pants, it was really cold.
After the winter vacation, you can sleep in. The cotton clothes had been baked on a copper stove, and it was not very difficult to get up. In particular, the cotton shoes are baked hot and are really comfortable to wear.
There are very few people in our house who produce iron stoves that burn coal. General heating, just copper stoves, foot stoves and hand stoves. The foot stove is brass with a cover with multiple eyes. Inside is coarse bran. The coarse chaff is filled, and the shovel is covered with a few shovels of red ash from the unburned reed fire (we burn reeds there, called "reed firewood"). The coarse chaff led, a puff of smoke, and after a while, when the smoke ran out, you could cover the stove. The coarse bran burns slowly and can last a long time.
The old ladies couldn't do without it. Idle, smearing cards, every old lady has a foot stove at her feet. The coarse chaff in the foot stove is too solid, the air is not enough, the fire is gradually weakening, you have to use the "fire plate" to dig along the side of the stove twice, the coarse chaff is loosened, and the fire is strong. Foot stove warms people. If your feet are not cold, your body is not cold. The smell of charred bran also smells good. "Hand stoves are smaller than foot stoves, most of them are white copper, and they are made of silver. The lid is not a round hole, most of it is a hollowed-out pine bamboo plum pattern. The hand stove has a very small, central charcoal mound (the coal is ground into fine powder, slightly added honey, and built into a cake), led by paper coal heads. A charcoal can last a day.
In winter, there are black cabbage, frozen tofu, and pickle soup. Black cabbage collapsed, flat on the ground, Jiangnan is called "collapsed bitter vegetables", this dish tastes slightly bitter. My grandmother set up a small plot of land in the back garden, planted black cabbage, frosted, the edges of the leaves were purple-red, and the taste was bitter and sweet. Black cabbage is cooked with "crab oil", and the taste is incomparable. "Crab oil" is made of large crabs cooked and meat, "refined" with lard, placed in a bowl in the sea, condensed into crab jelly, stored for a long time, can be eaten for a winter. After the tofu is frozen, I don't know why it is honeycomb-like. Dissolve, cut into small pieces and cook with fresh meat, bacon, beef, sea rice or pickles. Frozen tofu should be placed with peppers and garlic. We used to have no northern cabbage there, only "green vegetables". Chinese cabbage is shipped from Shandong, known as "yellow sprouts", very expensive. "Green vegetables" are like rapeseed and large, two feet high, are all year round, every family eats dishes. Pickles are pickled with greens. It's snowing overcast, drink pickle soup.
Winter games: kick the shuttlecock, grab the child, under the "getaway". "Getaway" is a square piece of white paper, the woodblock printed a spiral double path, between the two printed eight immortals, horses, rabbits, carp, shrimp... Scoop powder. There was a neighbor, there was a mortar. The mortar is usually not used much, and is only borrowed in winter by one or two dozen nearby families. The house was small, except for a stalk, only a few sieves and grates. It was fun to step on the mound, with a foot, a squeak, the mouth was raised, a bang, and landed in the nest. When the flour is scooped, you can steam the cake, make "Nian Baked Cake" (glutinous rice flour is a pedicle, wrapped in bean paste white sugar, as a cake, baked in a pot), and rub the dumplings (that is, soup dumplings).
