On December 8, local time, Hidalgo, mayor of Paris and presidential candidate of the French Socialist Party, called on France's left-wing political parties to unite and elect a presidential candidate to compete with incumbent President Macron and others in the April 2022 French general election.

According to Reuters reported on December 8, Hidalgo said in an interview that The French left-wing political parties should unite and pay more attention to social issues such as environmental protection and public education. Recent polls show that in the first round of voting in the 2022 French election, incumbent President Macron and two far-right politicians Le Pen and Zemole were in the top three, with 25%, 20% and 15% respectively. In contrast, the three presidential candidates of the left-wing party, Hidalgo, Ardor and Mélangon, have less than 10% of their approval ratings, and the highest Mélang-sur-mer has only about 9% of the support, making it difficult to compete with the current president, centrist leader Macron and others in the general election. However, the three candidates of the left-wing party have not yet decided whether to withdraw from the election.

In 2017, the French Socialist Party suffered a "fiasco" in the general election. At the time, the party's candidate, Amon, did poorly, garnering only 6 percent support and ending up fifth. The New York Times commented at the time that it was "a humiliating defeat" for the Socialists, and some French media even questioned the survival of the Socialists after that. Reuters analysis said that if Hidalgo or other left-wing party candidates want to storm the presidential seat in the 2022 general election, one of the "toughest" tasks for this person is to unite the divided left.
