The book is a book of revelation about man's faith. The authors, Luo Guangbin and Yang Yiyan, are both personal experiencers of the Kuomintang's Zha di Dong concentration camp, and they and the heroes in the novel have experienced those thrilling struggles together. After the founding of New China, in order to "tell future generations about the struggle here", they spent ten years to write a book, which was first published in December 1961.

On the eve of the liberation of Chongqing in 1949, the CCP "repeat offenders" who were imprisoned in concentration camps such as Baigongguan and Zha di Dong felt that they had little life, and at the last moment of their lives, they opened their hearts and spoke out, and completely relied on their loyalty to the revolution to express their opinions and ideas:

"A comparison of all traitors and martyrs, the economic problem, the love problem, the private life, these three personal problems are handled well or badly, which inevitably determines his attitude towards work and his loyalty to the revolution."

"Torture, torture, by personal courage and physical endurance alone, cannot be endured. Without a strong revolutionary consciousness and without the ideological preparation to sacrifice oneself and contribute to the revolution, one cannot pass the test. ”

"Seeing the destruction of the revolutionary organization, every comrade arrested hopes that the general political level will be raised in the organization. We should strictly rectify the work style and the whole party, wash away all non-party consciousness and work style, and not allow any bacteria to remain in our organization. ”

"I hope that the organization can actually study and deeply discover the root cause of the problem." Regularly rectify the party and rectify the work style, eliminate proletarian consciousness and style, and maintain the purity of the party. ”

……

The bloody and tearful exhortations of these revolutionary martyrs before their execution were summed up based on bloody and painful lessons, because the "Zhenjin Bao" incident and the armed uprising in eastern Sichuan that occurred in 1948 caused the defection of only a few leading cadres in important positions, which dealt a heavy blow to the sichuan provincial party committee and the Chongqing municipal party committee of our underground party, and many people were arrested and imprisoned. For example, Liu Guoding, secretary of the Chongqing Underground Party Committee, obviously has a social occupation and also spends money on the organization. Taking advantage of his position, he asked the comrades in charge of the organization of activities to borrow him some money to do business.

Another example is Ran Yizhi, deputy secretary of the Chongqing Municipal CPC Committee, who is usually enthusiastic and passionate, and speaks of revolutionary theory as the head of the Tao. When Zeng Zixia held the oath-taking ceremony for joining the party, her lover Liu Guozhi took the oath and Ran Yizhi took the oath. After the oath was taken, Ran Yizhi also painstakingly focused on educating them on revolutionary integrity. But half a month later, Ran Yizhi was arrested and immediately betrayed the lovers.

Some of the remains of revolutionary martyrs

In April 1949, the People's Liberation Army occupied Nanjing, and Liu Deng's army advanced into Chongqing. On the eve of victory, these revolutionary martyrs imprisoned in the Kuomintang concentration camps could survive simply by writing a confession or signing a letter of repentance, but one by one they chose to die for their faith and go forward. On October 28, 10 people, including Chen Ran, Wang Pu, and Cheng Shanmou, were killed at the Daping Theater; on November 14, 30 people, including Jiang Zhujun, Li Qinglin, and Qi Liang, were shot and killed at Lanya, a radio station of the "Sino-US Cooperation Institute"; and on November 27, Nearly 200 people, including Xu Xiaoxuan, Tan Shenming, and Liu Guozhi, were killed.

On December 25, 1949, Luo Guangbin, who had survived the massacre, "organized a report based on various sporadic materials available in the concentration camps (Zha Di Dong and Bai Gong Guan) and discussed and studied with some comrades", and handed it to the party organization, and the last chapter, "Opinions in Prison", was the core of the report. In 1980, Hu Kangmin, then deputy director of the Party History Research Office of the Chongqing Municipal CPC Committee, discovered this "Report" while collecting and studying historical materials on the chongqing underground party, and summarized the "Opinions in Prison" into "Eight Articles in Prison", which was first disclosed in the "Special Issue commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of the Martyrs of the White Mansion" in the "Red Rock Spring and Autumn":

Article 1: Prevent the corruption of leading members.

Article 2: Strengthen education within the Party and the tempering of practical struggles.

Third: Don't be idealistic, and don't be superstitious about your superiors.

Fourth: Pay attention to the route problem, do not jump from "right" to "left".

Fifth: Do not despise the enemy.

Article 6: Attach importance to the economic, romantic and life style of Party members, especially leading cadres.

Article 7: Strictly carry out the rectification of the whole party.

Article 8: Punishment of traitors and spies.

As the opinions of the martyrs based on the bitter lessons, the "Eight Articles in Prison" are as heavy as a thousand words in just 96 words, and each one is a yin yin entrustment to comprehensively and strictly administer the party. These opinions and suggestions are a summary of their experience in struggle, and each of them comes from the bottom of their hearts; they are their profound reflections on the lessons of failure, and their words are soaked with blood and tears; and they are their heartfelt hopes for New China and the COMMUNIST Party of China, which will soon come to power throughout the country.
