A statement from the organisers read: "EPCR has been informed from Scarlets that due to player welfare issues and the club's inability to safely field matchday teams, they are unable to complete the first round of the Heineken Champions Cup against Bristol The Bears are scheduled to take place at Ashton Gate on Saturday 11 December.

"As a result, the game in Pool B was cancelled and the Bristol Bears won the game at 28-0 at five match points under the rules of the game."

Following the discovery of a new variant of the coronavirus, South Africa imposed new travel restrictions.

Scarlett's trip to Bristol was scheduled the day after the end of the 10-day quarantine period, and they urged the EPCR to reconsider its stance on the rescheduling of European matches.

A club statement said: "After discussions between Scarlets management, coaches, players and medical and training staff, the overwhelming feeling is that choosing any of the 32 frontline squad members currently quarantined in quarantine would pose a physical risk. "Hotel outside Belfast.
