Li Peng: Taiwan's cooperation with the United States to play with fire is destined to be a dangerous game full of adventure and luck

Beijing, November 27 (Reporter Huang Yang) The 8th Cross-Strait Think Tank Academic Forum with the theme of "Carrying Forward the Spirit of Xinhai and Creating a Great Cause of Rejuvenation" was held in Beijing on the 26th. Li Peng, dean of the Institute of Taiwan Studies at Xiamen University, said at the forum that Taiwan, in cooperation with the United States in playing with fire, continues to provoke, test, and touch the mainland's "red line." Once the gun is wiped out, it will lead to consequences that everyone does not want to see. He pointed out that think tanks and scholars on both sides of the strait have the responsibility and obligation to seriously think about and study how to avoid further deterioration of the situation and avoid leading to serious crises or conflicts, thereby harming the interests and well-being of compatriots on both sides of the strait and affecting the process of the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Li Peng said: Everyone knows very well the reasons for how the current situation in the Taiwan Strait has come to where it is today step by step. In a video meeting with Biden, President Xi Jinping stressed that the situation in the Taiwan Strait is facing a new round of tension because the Taiwan authorities have repeatedly tried to "rely on the United States for independence, and some people in the United States are interested in "using Taiwan to control China." President Xi Jinping hit the nail on the head, and the essence of the problem is the collusion between the United States and Taiwan.

The United States is trying to use the Taiwan issue to contain China's development, and the DPP authorities are trying to use the support of the United States to promote the "Taiwan independence" process. The Intention of the United States to play the Taiwan issue as a card of strategic competition with China has been clearly revealed. The Taiwan authorities, on the other hand, are willing to be pawns of the United States, fully cooperate with the United States' fire-playing behavior, and even want to take advantage of the fire. "I think this is destined to be a dangerous game full of adventure and luck"!

President Xi Jinping has clearly pointed out that if the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces provoke and coerce, or even break through the "red line", we will have to take drastic measures. Li Peng believes that the question now is whether the DPP authorities, the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces on the island, and the anti-China forces in the United States know where the "red line" is. Is there a gap between the "red line" they perceive and the "red line" that the mainland adheres to? Do they have a reverence for the "red line"?

He said that the "red line" includes both objective facts and subjective determinations; it is both clear and vague; it is both static and dynamic. If we understand it from these angles, we can understand why the mainland is now stressing its opposition to any form of "Taiwan independence." Therefore, in the current situation, any provocation, testing and touching around the "red line" Chinese mainland the "red line" is very dangerous. He believes that whether it is a fluke mentality or a gun that goes wrong, it may lead to consequences that everyone does not want to see.

He pointed out that what is more dangerous is that the new crown epidemic has led to the interruption of direct and large-scale people-to-people exchanges between the two sides of the strait, and the intensification of cross-strait public opinion confrontation in the new media era may make the situation worse. This requires scholars on both sides of the strait to play a greater role, assume more responsibilities, and do a good job in policy communication and public opinion guidance, so as to avoid the situation in the Taiwan Strait from further developing in a dangerous direction, ensure the peace and stability of the situation in the Taiwan Strait, and safeguard the common interests and well-being of compatriots on both sides of the strait.
