In 1861 (the eleventh year of Xianfeng), the Taiping Army advanced towards Shanghai, and the Shanghai army could not resist. In March 1862, under the instruction of Zeng Guofan, Li Hongzhang recruited Huai Yong in Anqing to train a nearly modern army, which was also the main defense force of the Qing Dynasty, the "Huai Army".
On November 18, 1862, luo Guozhong, a defender of the Taiping Army, surrendered. Li Hongzhang took the opportunity to lead the Huai army to launch the Su and Chang campaigns, and won a fierce battle with the Taiping Army that came to huai. After clearing the outskirts of Suzhou, Li Hongzhang divided the plan of marching in three ways, capturing Wuxi, Pingwang, Wujiang and other places to cut off the taiping army support.
In July 1863, when the Huai army Cheng Xueqi attacked suzhou city, Li Xiucheng, the loyal king of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, came to the aid of the Huai army from Tianjing and fought with the Huai army at the corner of the Wuxi Bridge, and the Taiping army was defeated. In early November, the Defender of the Suzhou Taiping Army, Gao Yongkuan, and others annihilated the defender general Tan Shaoguang, the King of Mu, and surrendered Kaesong.
The Huai army entered the city, and Li Hongzhang seduced 8 generals to dismiss the remnants, after which the Huai army was victorious. In 1864, Changzhou was conquered, chen Kunshu, the protector of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, was arrested, and the Taiping Army in southern Jiangsu was purged.
The Qing court appointed Zeng Guofan as the chancellor of Qincha to go north to suppress the twist, but the history was unable to effectively command the Huai army for a year and a half. At the beginning of November, Li Hongzhang was renamed Qincha, and Zeng Guofan was made the governor of Liangjiang.
In early June 1867, the Western Twister Army and the main force of the Huai Army encountered, and a fierce battle between the Western Twister Army suffered casualties and was destroyed.

In October 1884, the French army attacked Taiwan, and the Huai general Liu Ming passed on the land battle, defeating the French army on both sides. In 1885, the French army was unsupported and forced to withdraw.

On September 17, 1894, the Chinese and Japanese navies fought a decisive battle in the Yellow Sea. The Beiyang Fleet severely damaged the Japanese fleet, but it also suffered heavy casualties, and Deng Shichang sacrificed more than 200 people to protect the flagship's entire ship.
The Beiyang Naval Base Defense War was also the last battle against Japan. The commander of the Japanese fleet persuaded Ding Ruchang to surrender, but Ding Ruchang refused to surrender to continue the battle, and the ammunition was exhausted. Liu Butou destroyed the ship and sacrificed, and Ding Ruchang refused to surrender and died. The Japanese landed on Liugong Island, the Weihaiwei Naval Base fell, and the Beiyang Fleet was completely destroyed.
Later, after the decline of the Huai Army, Yuan Shikai recruited the old generals of the Huai Army and became the main force at the end of the Qing Dynasty, and some of the old generals of the Huai Army gradually evolved into the prototype of the Beiyang warlords.
