Tao Yuanming is not shallow!
Just because of the phrase "good reading, do not seek much understanding", it has become a shield for many people to read and taste.
Feng Qiyong wrote in the 1950s that the world misunderstood Tao Yuanming very deeply. He quoted Yang Shen's "Sheng'an Poetry" in the Ming Dynasty: "If the layman does not reach it, he will say that he does not seek much understanding." This means that the average person thinks that Tao Yuanming reads books, tastes them, and reads books for interest. Therefore, Feng Wencai said that the average lazy reader misunderstood Tao Yuanming and made excuses for his laziness, but in fact, Tao Yuanming's reading was not only deep and diligent.

Yang Shen said that Tao Yuanming hated the style of excessive pursuit of the literal meaning of books since the Wei and Jin dynasties, and because of the light literary style of the Eastern Jin Dynasty and the Southern Dynasty, they regarded the Six Classics as a mess, and naturally did not want to delve into the meaning, but understood the gist. Zhu Ziqing counted Tao Yuanming's poetry dictionary, and once said that Tao's poetry quoted Zhuangzi the most, 49 times, the second analects, 37 times, and the third and 21 times. The abandonment of the Six Classics and the love of Zhuangzi's ethereal spirits, it is no wonder that Tao Yuanming can write an article entitled "Picking Chrysanthemums Under the Eastern Fence, Leisurely Seeing the South Mountain". The present-day people believe that the reason why Tao Yuanming did not seek much understanding in reading was that Liu Yu replaced the Eastern Jin Dynasty and massacred the emperors and courtiers of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, and Tao Yuanming was a descendant of The Famous Emperor of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, Tao Kan, who was dissatisfied, but did not dare and could not vent, so he had to not read the scriptures that needed "very understanding".
Scripture is difficult, so Du Fu's "Mancheng" poem: "It is difficult to read a book, and the pot of wine is poured." Close to Emei old, knowing yu laziness is true. Pu Qilong, a Qing dynasty, said in "Reading Du Xin Xie": "It is difficult to write, and it is lazy to see." Mr. Goyanagi does not seek much understanding, and his intention is the same. Du Fu and Tao Yuanming are both poets, and their hearts are surprisingly consistent, and they both think that for incomprehensible words, put them down first, and then slowly understand them, just as the Southern Song Dynasty theorist Lu Jiuyuan said: "Read and read flat, smile and let go, don't be too delayed."
Modern people are too impetuous in reading, always think that they need to understand, in fact, good books still have to be carefully read. Qian Zhongshu explained in the "Pipe Cone Compilation" that "do not seek much understanding", "In a person's body, the breadth and meticulousness of reading are not informal and meticulous, and it is appropriate to change from time to time and from event to event." That is to say, the effort and time spent on reading books depends on the quality and content of the books, and books that do not seek to understand are shoddy works. The really good book is to memorize it diligently, many modern people say "Lao Tzu", only five thousand words, hard to memorize, silent writing can not do, this kind of people say "Lao Tzu", pure waste!
