As an important town in the south, Changsha held out under the iron hooves of the Japanese army for five years during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, and was deeply marked by the flames of war.
The reason why Changsha can become a bridgehead to resist the Japanese army going south is inseparable from the vigorous Battle of Changsha, and in this process, countless heroes have emerged, such as the most representative Zhang Deneng.

Why is Zhang Deneng the most representative? Because he participated in all three battles of Changsha, he won and lost, and by virtue of changsha's great victory, he was promoted to lieutenant general, reaching the peak of his military career, but he was also late because of the loss of Changsha, and finally he was executed by shooting because he escaped from the battle, which can be called "Changsha, defeat also Changsha".
In 1922, Zhang Deneng, who had originally made a living in Vietnam, witnessed the domestic warlords dividing up the territory and fighting, resolutely returned to China, applied for the Yunnan Army Lecture Hall, and participated in the Northern Expedition.
During the Northern Expedition, Zhang Deneng's unit should be familiar to everyone, that is, the famous "Iron Army" 4th Army. During the Battle of Tingsi Bridge, Zhang Deneng was appreciated for his desperate efforts to save the commander Zhang Fakui, and by the eve of the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan, Zhang Deneng had moved at least the commander of the division and led the 59th Division to guard Changsha.
In September 1939, Okamura commanded 100,000 Japanese troops to kill Changsha in an attempt to encircle the Chinese forces in the Ninth Theater of Operations in a short period of time. Zhang Deneng, then commander of the Changsha garrison, fought bloodily with the Japanese army on the periphery for dozens of days, severely wounding the Japanese army and becoming the main contributor to the victory in the First Battle of Changsha. With this achievement, Zhang Deneng was promoted to deputy commander of the 4th Army.
However, almost before the celebration wine was finished, the Japanese army made a comeback. This time, Zhang Deneng and Ou Zhen, commander of the 4th Army, came to attack inside and outside, and in the tug-of-war time of more than half a month, they completely annihilated an entire division of the Japanese army!
This time, Zhang Deneng still played the role of the "savior" of Changsha City, trying to ensure that Changsha was safe and sound. After the war, Zhang Deneng was promoted to the commander of the 4th Army and promoted to lieutenant general, which can be described as a moment of glory.
However, it is estimated that Zhang Deneng could not have imagined that at this moment, he who was still embraced as a hero of the War of Resistance, would eventually fall into the abyss because of Changsha City!
In 1942, the Japanese army invaded Changsha again, at this time the domestic and international anti-fascist war situation has undergone a major change, taking Changsha has become a key step in the Japanese control of the Chinese battlefield, it is conceivable that the Japanese offensive is bound to be more crazy than ever.
However, at this time, Changsha's defense troops had another "moth". Originally, there were three main parts of the troops defending Changsha at that time: Zhang Deneng's 4th Army, the US Artillery Regiment, and Huang Tao's 36th Army, of which the US Artillery Regiment and the 36th Army were stationed in the area of Yuelu Mountain as the outer defense line of Changsha City.
However, although the 36th Army carried the name of the Central Army on its head and was also armed with sophisticated US weapons and equipment, it was a "cannon fodder army" with little experience, so the Japanese army pretended to attack Changsha, but secretly saw the opportunity to storm Yuelu Mountain, and as a result, the commander Huang Tao slipped away, and more than 50 cannons of the US army also fell into the hands of the Japanese.
Although Zhang Deneng, who had lost his peripheral strategy, fought desperately, Changsha, which had long become an isolated city, was impossible to hold, so Zhang Deneng immediately complained to Zhao Zili, chief of the general staff of the Ninth Theater Command, and led his troops to retreat after receiving the permission to retreat.
What is fatal is that at this time, Changsha was surrounded by the Japanese army on three sides, and Zhang Deneng only had to rush to cross the Xiang River, which was a retreat route, but due to the imperfect preparation of the tools for crossing the river, coupled with the carpet bombardment of the Japanese army, the 4th Army suffered heavy casualties, and when it retreated to Hengyang, it suffered two-thirds of the casualties!
Zhang Deneng, who knew that he could not escape the blame, intended to commit suicide, and was held by the guards to death, which gave up.
However, Zhang Deneng was not able to escape this fate after all, and after the fall of Changsha, Chiang Kai-shek, who was anxious to find someone to take charge, aimed the spearhead at Zhang Deneng, at the same time, Zhao Zili, who had approved Zhang Deneng's withdrawal from Changsha, also began to turn his face and not recognize people.
In fact, everyone understood that Zhang Deneng was just a pawn in the face of the crime, so after he was arrested, he did not dare to try him in public, nor did he dare to listen to his defense, but he was imprisoned, and 3 months later he was summarily executed on the charge of "losing Changsha and losing his chances".
