Sullivan: U.S.-China competition in the Indo-Pacific doesn't need to evolve into a "new Cold War"

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said on the 11th that although the competition between the United States and China in the Indo-Pacific region is fierce, there is no need to evolve into a "new Cold War", and said that the United States is increasing the country's presence in the Indo-Pacific region. In response, the Chinese side said that the US side should correctly view the mutually beneficial and win-win nature of Sino-US relations.

The United States and China will not break out a "new Cold War"

Reuters reported that Sullivan attended an online forum held by the Lowy Institute in Australia by video on the same day, and he pointed out that the United States has withdrawn from Afghanistan, so that it can pay more attention to the Indo-Pacific region and hope to minimize the possibility of conflict.

In response to concerns about the possibility of a "new Cold War" between the United States and China, Sullivan pointed out that everyone can choose not to go this step, he stressed that as President Joe Biden said, move forward from fierce competition, fierce competition in economic and technological aspects, and defend American values. However, he also believes that China will become an important player in the international system in the foreseeable future.

In addition, Sullivan pointed out that the United States is a resident power in the Indo-Pacific region, Guam is all U.S. territory, and Washington has long had a substantial garrison in Japan, South Korea, and Australia. He stressed that the United States has been a permanent force in the Indo-Pacific region for decades, arguing that such a move plays a key role in Washington's geopolitical role, reiterating that the United States will remain in the Indo-Pacific region and must learn how to deal with reality.

He also pointed out that after the United States joined the Australian-Anglo-American Alliance (AUKUS), its participation in the Indo-Pacific region became more intensive, but it did not mean that the United States turned its back on Europe and other parts of the world.

The United States should adopt a rational and pragmatic China policy

In response to Sullivan's China-related remarks, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin presided over a regular press conference on the 12th and said that the US side should correctly view the mutually beneficial and win-win nature of Sino-US relations.

According to the Hong Kong China News Agency, Wang Wenbin said that there is a certain degree of competition in international relations, but it should be healthy competition on the basis of abiding by the basic norms of international relations. We oppose unfair competition in which our own rules are regarded as international rules and force other countries to abide by them, unfair competition in the name of competition that undermines the sovereignty of other countries and interferes in the internal affairs of other countries, and opposes immoral competition that restricts the development of other countries and deprives other countries of their legitimate rights and interests in the name of competition.

Wang Wenbin said that china and the United States have both differences and extensive common interests, and defining Sino-US relations by competition is not in line with the reality of bilateral relations and contradicts the US policy toward China. The US side should correctly view the mutually beneficial and win-win nature of Sino-US relations, adopt a rational and pragmatic China policy, work with China to strengthen communication with China, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, properly manage differences, and take the road of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation.

It is worth mentioning that on the 10th of this month, Wang Wenbin revealed that China and the United States are maintaining close communication on the specific arrangements for the meeting between the two heads of state. (End)
